Karen Weekly reveals adjustment team needs to make to come back vs Florida State

Tennessee found itself down 2-1 halfway through Monday’s Women’s College World Series semifinal matchup against Florida State. But as Karen Weekly talked with Holly Rowe on the ESPN broadcast of the game in the middle of the fourth inning, she said that the team has been close to getting better contact.

“We were just getting under her,” Weekly said. “We gotta make that adjustment to get the barrel up and get it on plane a little bit better.”

The Seminoles started Mack Leonard. Leonard pitched two innings, allowing a home run to Zaida Puni in the top of the first inning. Makenna Reid then replaced her at the start of the third inning.

On the mound for Weekly was Karlyn Pickens, the 2023 SEC Freshman of the Year.

“The velocity is tough for anybody, especially the first time they see it,” Weekly said. “She needs to just get the ball down a little bit in some spots. I think she could get some more swings and misses. She can locate just a little bit better.”

But in the top of the fifth after Weekly’s interview, Pickens ran into some problems. She got the first out of the inning before allowing a single and then hitting a batter. Ashley Rogers replaced Pickens at that point. Jahni Kerr then hit a bloop single to center field to score a run and gave the Seminoles an insurance run to go up 3-1.

Weekly’s star hitter, Kiki Milloy, was 0-for-2 at the time of the interview in the middle of the fourth. But she made great contact during her first at-bat and had made a great play in the field.

“Kiki does everything for us,” Weekly said. “You saw the catch in center field. She makes great plays.”

Milloy entered the game with a .416 batting average with a .564 on-base percentage, .952 slugging percentage, 25 home runs, 56 RBI, 12 doubles and 86 runs scored.
