JUCO WR Shemar Kirk chooses Miami Hurricanes, gives team offensive playmaker

The Miami Hurricanes added some much-needed wide receiver help with the team adding Alabama transfer Tyler Harrell out of the transfer portal. And now UM’s gotten more help for a wide receivers room that struggled last season.

Reedley College wideout Shemar Kirk, a 6-1, 180-pounder, visited Miami the weekend of May 5 and has made his decision. He will be suiting up for the Canes this season.

Others that pursued him included Texas A&M, UCF and Mississippi State.

Kirk, who added a Miami offer May 3, garnered a lot of interest as a JUCO transfer after putting up impressive numbers in the last two seasons.

As a freshman out of McGarock High School in Nashville, Tenn., he had 45 catches in eight games with 782 yards and eight TDs. That included an 85-yard TD.

And this past season he played in 10 games and had 31 receptions for 664 yards with seven TDs. One of those? A 90-yarder.

Yes, he has that big-play ability Miami was missing so much last season when the Hurricanes’ top wide receiver, Colbie Young, had just 367 yards.

Kirk comes into the Shannon Dawson offense with the expectation he will compete to start at one of the outside spots. The team has several capable slot receivers in Xavier Restrepo, Brashard Smith and speedy freshman Ray Ray Joseph. Competing for reps on the outside along with the aforementioned Harrell are Jacolby George and Young (the first teamers this spring) along with Isaiah Horton, Mike Redding, Frank Ladson and newcomer Robby Washington.

Miami’s hope is that in the new attack and with a healthy QB Tyler Van Dyke it will be a much different result from a year ago when Van Dyke missed the latter half of the year injured and the receivers struggled to make plays down the field. That Miami offense ranked No. 85 in the nation in total offense (367.1 yards) and No. 59 in passing  yards per game (239.0) along with No. 84 in team passing efficiency (128.65).

The addition of Kirk should be a step in helping turn that around.
