Josh Heupel reacts to meeting Tennessee fan who got face tattooed after Alabama win

After a huge win, fans will come up with creative ways to commemorate the moment. After Tennessee‘s victory over Alabama last season, their fans partied like it was 1999. But one fan went above and beyond that and decided to get a tattoo to celebrate the victory; a tattoo of Volunteers’ head coach Josh Heupel’s face, that is; on his leg.

Heupel got a chance to meet that individual who tattooed his face after the Alabama win. And during a recent interview with 99.1 The Sports Animal, the Volunteers’ head man gave his thoughts on his meeting with the fan.

“Well, my wife hasn’t done that yet. I’m kind of questioning her commitment at this point. But it was cool to get a chance to see him. He was actually here for our coaches’ clinic, and I got a chance to spend some time with him. I love that he’s passionate about Tennessee and where we’re headed,” said Heupel.

While the tattoo is a bit on the extreme side, it arguably was not the wildest thing to happen following the Volunteers’ 52-49 victory over the Crimson Tide back in Oct. of 2022. After storming the field to celebrate Tennessee‘s win over Alabama, fans tore down the goal post and carried it out of the stadium. The fans quickly tore down the goal post that Tennessee kicker Chase McGrath kicked the game-winning field goal through while on the field, and proceeded to pass it around on the field with some fans riding on top of it and the crowd of people. After finding an exit big enough to accommodate their new oversized souvenir, fans carried it out of the stadium as stadium security watched them move past. The goal post would eventually find its way to the Tennesse River by the end of the celebration.

While the meeting with the leg-face tattoo fan was interesting to Heupel, it’s not what he’s excited about heading into the summer. The Volunteers’ head coach also spoke on the development of Joe Milton in the spring.

“I thought he was extremely efficient and effective inside of the pocket, had great balance, eye discipline, was really solid and extremely accurate with the football during the course of our spring practice,” Heupel said.

Milton went 2-0 in those two games, including leading Tennessee to a 31-14 win over Clemson in the Orange Bowl to close out the year.

Milton is now expected to take over for former Vols QB Hendon Hooker as the full-time starter in 2023 after passing for 971 yards with 10 touchdowns and no interceptions in limited playing time in 2022.
