Jordan Woolery walks through her game-winning home run vs. Alabama

UCLA’s Jordan Woolery delivered the goods in the Bruins’ Thursday afternoon win over Alabama to kick-start their run in the Women’s College World Series.

In the top of the sixth inning, with the game knotted at 1-1, UCLA got two runners aboard for Megan Grant, who struck out. But then it was Woolery who stepped into the box and delivered a home run swing to push the Bruins out to a 4-1 advantage. That would ultimately be the final score as UCLA staved off any attempt at a Crimson Tide rally.

After the game, Woolery was interviewed and said that there have been moments where Megan Grant stepped up in other games, so she just wanted to do her part on Thursday.

“I just wanted to have Megan’s back. She’s had my back all year long. Seeing her go down, I wanted to step up and be there for her,” said Woolery. “Even if I didn’t get the outcome, I knew we were going to come through and play for the rest of the day if we had to.”

When asked if she knew that ball was gone the moment she hit it, Woolery admitted she honestly didn’t know: “I think I blacked out after I hit it. I don’t really remember honestly,” she answered.

Next, Jordan Woolery discussed how she maintained her composure to come through in perhaps the biggest moment of the season.

“I think my last at-bat, not letting the moment get to me and, like, being too big. Settling in in my third at-bat, where the first two I was kind of excited to be here, excited to play. So settling in and just playing my game was a big portion of that.”

The Bruins first baseman also revealed that assistant coach Kirk Walker provided her with some calming advice going into her final plate appearance.

“He just told me it was already written, and I didn’t have to do anything more. It was going to happen how it was and I just trusted the process. It’s really cool,” said Woolery.

To close out the postgame interview on the field, Woolery expressed the importance of UCLA getting the first win of the series.

“I was super excited that we won Game 1; it really set the tone for the rest of the week,” Woolery said before heading off the field.
