Jerry Jones ‘surprised’ viral Dallas radio hit received so much attention
Dallas Cowboys (3-3) owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday he was “surprised” that his outburst at a Dallas radio host the week prior received as much attention as it did.
Jones offered no apology for threatening the jobs of Shan Shariff and RJ Choppy of 105.3 The Fan.
“I don’t have anything to say about last week,” Jones said. “I’m surprised last week got the attention it got.”
Days removed from the Cowboys’ 47-9 Week 6 blowout defeat to the Detroit Lions (5-1), their third consecutive loss at home this season, Shariff and Choppy questioned Jones over his lack of moves in the offseason. Jones said it’s “not your job” to question him “over all the reasons that I did something and I’m sorry that I did it.”
“This is not your job,” Jones said. “Your job isn’t to let me go over all the reasons that I did something and I’m sorry that I did it. That’s not your job. I’ll get somebody else to ask these questions. I’m not kidding. You’re not going to figure it out what the team is doing right or wrong. If you are, or any five or 10 like you, you need to come to this [NFL] meeting I’m going to today with 32 teams here, you’re geniuses.
“You really think you’re gonna sit here with a microphone and tell me all of the things that I’ve done wrong without going over the rights? Listen, we both know we’re talking to a lot of great fans, a lot of great listeners. And I’m very sorry for what happened out there Sunday. I’m sick about what happened Sunday.”
Jerry Jones’ offseason moves come into question after 3-3 start
Jones notably declared the Cowboys as “all-in” on the 2024 season, looking to advance further in the playoffs than they have in the last three decades. Among the notable moves they made in the offseason, the Cowboys brought back veteran running back Ezekiel Elliott, signed linebacker Eric Kendricks and selected left tackle Tyler Guyton in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Elliott is playing backup to Rico Dowdle, Kendricks missed the game against Detroit with a calf/shoulder injury, while Guyton has graded out 97th among 115 offensive tackles this season, according to Pro Football Focus. The offense has averaged just 21.0 points per game, while the defense is a bottom-10 unit in the NFL.
Jerry Jones reveals why Cowboys did not sign Derrick Henry in free agency
Jones decided against signing All-Pro running back Derrick Henry in free agency. Henry, who lives and trains in Dallas during the offseason, admitted he wanted to play for the Cowboys. He instead signed a two-year, $16 million deal with the Ravens.
Jones revealed Tuesday that Henry would not have fit under the team’s salary cap. Though the 30-year-old appears to be better than ever in Baltimore, Jones is not convinced he would be having the same success in Dallas.
“I don’t know if he’d be having a career year in our situation,” Jones said, via Jon Machota of The Athletic. “… We don’t run that type of offense at all. … Derrick Henry didn’t fit [because of] managing the [salary] cap.”
That decision looks more and more questionable by the game, as Dallas has the worst rushing attack in football, averaging 77.2 yards per game. Henry eclipsed Dallas’ season per game average in one run (81 yards) during Monday’s 41-31 Week 7 road win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-3). The Ravens have the No. 1 rushing offense in the NFL, with Henry running for a league-high 873 yards on 6.5 yards per carry and eight touchdowns.
