Jerry Jones pressed on Mike McCarthy’s job security entering 2024
You may not find a bigger fan of Mike McCarthy out there than Jerry Jones. McCarthy has brought stability to the Dallas Cowboys during the regular season. The only team to have fewer wins over the last three seasons is the Kansas City Chiefs.
“Mike McCarthy is an outstanding coach,” Jones told ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith in a sitdown interview. “We’ve had 12 win seasons over the last three years. Now, I agree with you that we have not had the playoff success that you would have wanted to have with a Super Bowl-winning coach in Mike McCarthy. But I’ll tell you first hand, he’s got outstanding ways with players, he’s an outstanding coach, as a hard-working coach as I’ve ever been around. He’s an outstanding coach.”
All of those positives from Jones but the second sentence tells it all. Dallas has fallen short in the playoffs in all three seasons. Just one win is on McCarthy’s resume as the Cowboys resume before getting beat by the San Francisco 49ers (x2) and the Green Bay Packers.
But for the most part, Jones likes the quality McCarthy brings to the building on a daily basis. It’s what has brought an immense amount of regular season success to Dallas.
There is still no contract extension in front of the head coach, though. Jones could prove his confidence in extending McCarthy and securing his future. Instead, the plan for the Dallas owner is to put “things on the line.”

“What you’re seeing from me is just the way I’m doing it right now,” Jones said. “Certainly, I did not renew a lot of contracts. There’s nothing keeping me from renewing a contract this afternoon. This is just the way that I wanted to do so we could basically speak to fans, team, everybody involved. We’re putting things on the line.”
If Dallas can win 12 games once again, it will match what the franchise was able to do in the glory days in the mid-1990s. The Cowboys had 49 regular season wins from 1992-1995. Only a slight difference in which three Lombardi Trophies were won plus an NFC Championship game loss.
McCarthy has won a Super Bowl in the past and there appears to be confidence from Jones that he can do so with the Cowboys. Jones had just decided to hold out on an extension, maybe adding a little more fire to this season’s outlook for McCarthy.
