Jerrick Gibson on Colin Simmons: “I knew for a while”

Colin Simmons decision between Texas, Miami and LSU kept fan bases of all three teams on the edge of their seats coming down the stretch.
When Simmons announced his decision Thursday afternoon at Duncanville High, many were still wondering where he was headed up until he put the Texas hat on.
Not everybody was wondering, however. One person that was not the least bit surprised was Longhorns running back commitment Jerrick Gibson. The 5-foot-10.5, 207-pounder told On3’s Keith Niebuhr Friday at IMG Academy media day that he knew for a while.
“That was big (the commitment),” Gibson said Friday. “I kind of knew it was going to happen. We had talked before that. It wasn’t a surprise. I had to keep it on the down low until it happened.”
The Sunshine State running back said he knew longer than some might think.
“Right after the visit (June 23-24). When I committed, I already knew he was coming.”
Not only is Simmons a friend to Gibson, but a standout leader.
“He’s a great guy. A standout leader. He stands out among other teenagers. He’s a great friend to have.”
The No. 64 ranked prospect in the country said building the class is the No. 1 goal for all the commitments.
“We have a great class, and bonding more with each other all the time. We are still trying to build on our class right now. There are some big lineman we want to come join us.”
Gibson’s next trip to Texas
Gibson told On3 Friday that he plans to get back to Texas during the season to watch the Longhorns play.
“I don’t have any right now, but we have two bye weeks during the season. On one of those two bye weeks, I’m going to try and get to Texas.”
The IMG Academy bye weeks fall on one weekend when Texas plays a home game. The weekend of September 30 for the Kansas game is a sound bet for when Gibson and teammate Jordon Johnson-Rubell will be back in Austin.
Recruiting doesn’t stop
Programs will continue to recruit the No. 5 ranked running back in the country until the fax is received by Steve Sarkisian in December. The two schools that are going to keep swinging for sure are from inside the Florida state line.
“Florida and Miami. Florida just tells me they are going to stop fighting until it’s over and done with.”
For the Gators, that will be a tough mountain to climb. Gibson maintains that he is fully committed to Tashard Choice and the Longhorns.
IMG Academy opens the 2023 season August 18 against Lipscomb Academy out of Nashville.
