JD PicKell confident in Notre Dame’s new-look offense under Mike Denbrock

JD PicKell confident in Notre Dame’s new-look offense under Mike Denbrock

Notre Dame is not going to look like a traditional Notre Dame this season, at least on offense. Marcus Freeman hired Mike Denbrock as the offensive coordinator, hoping to bring a more high-powered offense to South Bend. Over are the days of two, potentially three tight ends. Denbrock is going to run a lot of 11-personnel, spreading opponents out.

“This is not the old-school Notre Dame offense that we’ve been accustomed to,” PicKell said. “This is not going to be three yards and a cloud of dust, this is not going to be under center a whole lot. It’s going to be spread it out. ‘Yes, we’re going to run the football but we want to get you out on the perimeter. We want to get the ball to playmakers downfield. We want our quarterback to be a dual-threat and rip it downfield.’ This is going to be an exciting brand of offense under Mike Denbrock.”

The Fighting Irish welcome Denbrock back to the program after spending the last two seasons in Baton Rouge with LSU. All he did was develop No. 2 overall pick and Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels while in Baton Rouge, while also producing two first-round wide receivers.

Riley Leonard is hoping to develop just as well and find a way to put up similar numbers. He was brought in from Duke with high expectations and hopes to lead the way.

At the same time, PicKell could not be higher on running back Jeremiyah Love. He thinks there is an opportunity for him to become a household name following the season opener on primetime. Not just in the run game either but when Riley is looking to distribute quickly.

“He is a name to know,” PicKell said. “He is going to introduce himself to all of college football on a national level in that game against Texas A&M. They’re going to find ways to get him the football.

“Whether it’s in the pass game, the run game — get Jeremiyah Love the ball in space and good things will happen. He is a name to know, I think he’s going to have a massive year in South Bend. Especially in this scheme with Mike Denbrock running the show.”

Notre Dame is hopeful to make the College Football Playoff this season. If they are able to accomplish the goal, the potential PicKell sees in the offense likely pans out.
