Jared Spencer injury update: Texas pitcher exits game vs. Auburn in third inning

Texas was hoping for another series-opening start from Jared Spencer on Thursday night against Auburn. Instead, there is now an injury to worry about. Spencer left the game during the third inning after trainers looked at the right-hander on the mound.

“Jared Spencer is leaving the game in the third inning after the training staff came out to look at him,” David Eckert of The Austin American-Statesman said via X. “Gave up a homer on a pitch at 92 MPH, which is definitely a tick down from his usual fastball velo.”

Kendall Rogers of D1 Baseball added a little bit more information. There was no stop in the dugout for Spencer, going straight to the locker room. Certainly not a site any Texas fan wants to see, holding their breath until news on the injury is delivered.

“Damn. Jared Spencer just left the Auburn-Texas game in the third inning with some sort of injury,” Rogers said via X. “He went into the dugout and straight to the locker room. Hopefully, he is OK.”

Spencer saw his night finished with 2.2 innings, two hits allowed, two earned runs, one walk, and a strikeout. Head coach Jim Schlossnagle had to go to his bullpen earlier than expected and called upon Max Grubbs.

The concern will be more about the long-term, though. Texas is the No. 1 team in the country at the moment as they are enjoying early life in the SEC. Spencer has been a huge reason for their success, turning into one of the best pitchers in college baseball.

And next weekend will be a big one for the program. Texas A&M is coming to town for the first time since Schlossnagle left College Station. While Disch-Falk Field will play host, emotions are going to be at a different level. Having Spencer on the mound would be a great equalizer for the Longhorns.

“One inning, save. One pitch at a time,” Spencer said about his approach after a Friday night win against Georgia. “That’s something that (pitching coach) Max (Weiner) always repeats to us, and that’s something that I kept in the back of my mind the whole night.”

Heading into Thursday night, Spencer had made nine appearances for Texas after transferring in from Indiana State. He has worked in 49.2 innings with his ERA just a few ticks above three at 3.08. Opposing batters are hitting just .215 against him.
