Jalen Milroe opens up on a major lesson he learned from Nick Saban as he prepares for Week 1

Jalen Milore and Nick Saban built a special bond throughout the 2023 Alabama season. Especially as Milroe grew into the starting quarterback role, the two’s relationship became more noticeable. Even as Saban moved out of the program due to retirement, nothing but positive stories have been told from Milroe.

The latest occurred on Monday, sharing a major lesson he learned from Saban. It’s one Saban has preached throughout his entire coaching career — trusting the process. Milroe has also made sure to set short-term and long-term goals for himself, allowing there to be something on the other side.

“It’s all about process, it’s all about trusting,” Milroe said. “That’s something I learned from Coach Saban. As cliche as it is, just trusting the process. There’s going to be light at the end of that tunnel based on your race. Your race is your race, nobody else can determine your race.

“So, that’s something I take a lot of pride in when it comes to a journey. There’s going to be brighter days and it’s all about setting short-term goals and long-term goals. When you have that, you have something that’s reachable. You have something that you’re working towards.”

Milroe made great strides as the starting quarterback under Saban. So when he retired, the mindset could have changed, and with a new voice in his year, the lesson learned under his former head coach could have gone out the window.

Kalen DeBoer believes in the same thought process, though. Milroe gave the initial credit to Saban but said DeBoer has made sure to continue to bring the mindset into how his program is run.

“At this aspect of where I’m at as a quarterback, there’s always room for improvement, never can get complacent,” Milroe said. “But I can truly say I am proud of myself because of the process and just trusting it. That’s something I got to credit Coach Saban for and now Coach DeBoer. He emphasizes trusting the process.”

Milroe did not express any of his upcoming goals. One of his long-term ones might be winning a national championship this season at Alabama, a process that will extend into late January. It will begin Saturday with a likely short-term goal, hoping to take down Western Kentucky in the season opener.
