Jake Peters commit: What does it mean for Nebraska?

Nebraska added its second offensive line commit for the class of 2024 from Cedar Falls (Iowa) standout Jake Peters.

The 6-foot-3, 265-pound Peters camped at NU last week and took his official visit to Lincoln this weekend to give the Big Red its 11th commitment for the class of 2024.

Here are some quick takes and thoughts on the commitment of Peters and what it means for the Huskers.

1. Peters camped at Nebraska a week ago, and the Huskers immediately followed with a scholarship offer. Head coach Matt Rhule has continually said he’s going to emphasize camp workouts, and we’ve seen that all play out over June.

2. What I like about Peters is he’s a competitor. He also plays basketball and throws the shot put and discus in track. He’s a great athlete that moves well for his size. He averaged just under 6 points a game in basketball and threw the shot put 53-7 3/4 this past May.

3. Peters is now the second offensive line commit in the Huskers class of 2024, joining Gibson Pyle. They’ve loaded up a lot on tackle bodies in the past few years. Flynt and Peters look better fitted as interior linemen at the next level.

4. Offensive line coach Donovan Raiola continues to build his room for the future. People forget in 2022, he did not have the chance to sign or bring in any new guys. In 2023 he signed four high school linemen and brought in two transfers. He now has two for 2024 coming as well.

5. Since the internet era of online recruiting began in the class of 2002, Nebraska has signed just eight scholarship players from Iowa. They did not land any in the classes of 2022 or 2023. Peters is just the third offensive lineman NU has landed from Iowa, joining John Raridon and Henry Lutovsky.

6. Recruiting is often a number game for every Power Five program. Iowa didn’t pursue Peters with a scholarship offer this summer because they filled up at the interior offensive line.

7. The commitment from Peters should again send a message to regional prospects. If you camp at Nebraska under Rhule and back it up, they will follow through with an offer. Peters is a perfect example of a camp workout quickly turning into an offer and then a commitment within a week.
