‘It’s Florida State’ … 4-star DBs Chris Ewald, Jameer Grimsley eager for FSU visits, Elite Camp

Summer camp season continues for the Florida State football program this weekend, with the invitation-only Elite Camp being the highlight on Saturday.

One of the top targets coming into town for that event is four-star defensive back and Michigan commit Chris Ewald. The four-star prospect is one of three recruits expected to visit from South Florida’s Chaminade-Madonna Prep this weekend, with the others being Zaquan Patterson and Jojo Trader.

All three prospects came on a team visit to FSU in early March and already decided to come back to Tallahassee.

“Well, it’s Florida State.” Ewald said when asked about the trip and interest. “They have a great football tradition, and we both have mutual interest. So I wanted to come back with my dad to come visit.”

Ewald is rated the eighth-best cornerback in the country for 2025 and the 18th-best player in Florida, according to the On3 Industry Ranking.

And the four-star DB has created a close relationship with fellow South Florida native and Florida State linebackers coach Randy Shannon. Now, he’s working on developing a similar bond with first-year secondary coach Patrick Surtain.

“I’ve been speaking with Coach Randy Shannon when he comes by Chaminade, but I’m looking forward to building that relationship with Coach Surtain,” Ewald said. “He’s a South Florida guy like myself. I watch what he did when he was [head coach] at American Heritage as far as DB development. It’s crazy.”

Florida State’s recent play under head coach Mike Norvell has really stood out to the young defensive back as well.

“ [Coach Norvell] is doing a great job at Florida State, and he’s building it brick by brick,” Ewald said. “His first few seasons were a little rocky, but I think they are legit national contenders this year.”

As for what the Seminoles can do to impress the Michigan commit, he said it is fairly simple: Just win.

“I want to see FSU become a winning program consistently, and I think they’re heading in that direction,” he said. “Also want to see the development of the DBs the next two years before I get there.”

Another prospect who will also be at Elite Camp on Saturday and at FSU for an official visit is four-star defensive-back Jameer Grimsley.

“They’re the best team in Florida right now, and just the history and it’s an in-state school.” Grimsley told Warchant. “I love what Norvell is doing with the program and everything he stands for with his team.”

The talented 2024 prospect from Tampa Catholic is listed as the 11th-best corner and 14th-best player in Florida, according to On3.

According to On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine, the Seminoles are the perceived leader, but other schools include Alabama, Penn State and North Carolina.

As for what Grimsley is looking for on the visit, he said he wants to keep building his relationships with the team.

“Just looking forward to hanging around the coaches and players more,” he said.
