Iowa Recruiting Spotlight: Tight End

As we continue our position-by-position breakdown of Iowa’s recruiting, next up is tight end where the Hawkeyes have two commitments in the Class of 2024 and several promising targets in the Class of 2025 as well. We dive into all of the details and names, the hits and misses, and much more in this update.
Iowa’s Class of 2024
The Hawkeyes were able to land a pair of highly sought after tight ends in the month of June with verbal commitments from Michael Burt and Gavin Hoffman.
Starting with Burt, the 6-foot-6, 226-pound Omaha native is a tight end that already excels as both a receiver and blocker, proved it in person at Iowa’s camp, and seems like a perfect fit for the Hawkeyes. Burt, a three-sport athlete with high upside, verbally committed to Iowa on June 22, 2023, choosing the Hawkeyes over scholarship offers from Nebraska, Minnesota, Illinois, Eastern Michigan, Miami-OH, Northern Illinois, South Dakota, South Dakota State, Northern Iowa, and Southeast Missouri State.
In Hoffman, the Hawkeyes are adding a physically gifted 6-foot-5, 220-pound prospect with wide receiver skills that turned in a 4.56 forty and 40″ vertical on the camp circuit this summer. Hoffman, who had 39 catches for 713 yards and 11 touchdowns as a junior, verbally committed to Iowa on June 27, 2023, choosing the Hawkeyes over scholarship offers from Missouri, Nebraska, Arizona State, Auburn, Tennessee, Arkansas, Illinois, Purdue, Texas Tech, and Marshall, among others.
Class of 2024 Misses
Some of Iowa’s early offers at tight end that ended up going elsewhere would be Christian Bentancur (Clemson), Brady Prieskorn (Michigan), Carter Nelson (Nebraska), Jaden Reddell (Georgia), Grant Stec (Wisconsin), Eric Karner (Texas A&M), Rob Booker (UCLA), and Timothy Lawson (North Carolina).
Class of 2025 Top Targets
The Iowa coaching staff already has three major targets at tight end in the Class of 2025, all of whom were at the Hawkeye Tailgater in June.
Starting out-of-state, Indiana native Brock Schott was able to make his first visit to campus this summer and was impressed by everything the Hawkeyes have to offer. A 6-foot-4, 210-pound prospect, Schott has interest on both sides of the ball at tight end and defensive end and Iowa is among the schools that would let him pick which one he would rather play. Currently, he remains undecided on that front and has no favorites yet with an offer list that includes Iowa, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Miami, Louisville, Indiana, Purdue, Minnesota, Rutgers, Cincinnati, Georgia Tech, Duke, and Vanderbilt, among others.
In-state prospect Thomas Meyer also has offers on both sides of the ball, but the Hawkeyes really like him at tight end. The 6-foot-5, 210-pound Clear Lake native has been a frequent visitor to campus and grew up a Hawkeye fan but is trying to keep an open mind as he evaluates all of his options. Currently, he holds scholarship offers from Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.
Continuing with the trend of versatile tight end prospects, Iowa City West junior Mason Woods is a recruit that could play just about anywhere in college from wide receiver to tight end to linebacker or even long snapper. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Woods is the son of former Hawkeye player and current Iowa special teams coordinator LeVar Woods. Currently, he holds scholarship offers from Iowa, Missouri, Wyoming, Tulsa, and South Dakota with interest from Notre Dame, Florida, and Wisconsin, among others.
