Iowa lands walk-on commitment at quarterback
On Friday afternoon the Iowa football team picked up an intriguing preferred walk-on for the Class of 2025. That player is Ryan Fitzgerald from Loyola Academy in Chicago.
If that last name seems familiar, it should be as Fitzgerald is the son of former Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald. On3.om ranks Fitzgerald as a three star prospect and he turned down scholarship opportunities at Northern Illinois, Bowling Green, Toledo, Kent State, and Temple to begin his career as a non-scholarship player at the University of Iowa.
Fitzgerald stands 6-foot-3 and weighs in at approximately 205 pounds. He visited Iowa late last season with his father and the 2025 quarterback prospect certainly felt good about what he saw.
“Super excited for this opportunity! Can’t wait to play for Coach Ferentz and Coach Lester!,” he said via direct message. “I have so much respect for Coach Ferentz and it’s been a dream of mine to play for him. Also to be coached by Coach Lester is a once in a lifetime opportunity I can’t pass on.”
One week ago, his high school teammate, Drew MacPherson, gave his verbal commitment to the Hawkeyes as a scholarship player. MacPherson projects to play safety at Iowa.
Last season, Fitzgerald led Loyola to a state title in Class 8A in Illinois. In that title game he completed 17-21 passes for 203 yards and he also rushed for 89 yards. Overall last season, Fitzgerald passes for 2,056 yards and 20 touchdowns. He also rushed for 634 yards and 14 scores on his way to earning Chicago Catholic League Offensive Player of the Year honors.
The Iowa quarterback room continues to add depth. They recently added Brendan Sullivan, who played for Pat Fitzgerald at Northwestern. Iowa also has Marco Lainez returning along with James Resar, who will be a part of Iowa’s team this fall. Iowa also has a commitment from Jimmy Sullivan from Indiana in the Class of 2025. Sullivan will enter Iowa as a scholarship player.
