Iowa Hawkeyes Basketball Scholarship Distribution Chart

While we wait for Payton Sandfort to make his decision as to whether he will return for his senior year, it’s a good time to sort of reset the board. That means looking at the scholarship distribution chart where we can hopefully forecast what future recruiting classes might look like in terms of numbers and what positions might need to be filled in the Class of 2025 and beyond.

First, let’s look at who moved on. Ben Krikke is out of eligibility and moved on. Patrick McCaffery, Dasonte Bowen, and Tony Perkins could have potentially returned for their Covid year, but they decided to enter the transfer portal. McCaffery will finish up at Butler, Perkins will be at Missouri and Bowen will continue his playing career at St. Bonaventure.

Iowa will be adding four players to the roster. A pair of incoming freshman in Cooper Koch and Chris Tadjo, along with portal addition in Drew Thelwell and Seydou Traore. Thelwell will have one year at Iowa and Traore will have three years of eligibility remaining.

The remaining question for this class is what Payton Sandfort does. He is still in the NBA Draft process. Last week he took part in the NBA Draft Combine and will likely have more individual workouts with teams before deciding if he will stay in the draft or return to Iowa for his senior season.

It is possible that if Sandfort stays in the draft that Iowa could add another player late out of the portal, but there are somewhat limited options, especially when it comes to shooters. So there is a chance that the Hawkeyes could go into next season with two open rides. The feeling is Fran McCaffery will wait to see what his senior to be wing does before seriously looking at any other options.
