Iowa Defense Snap Counts – Western Michigan
In the first half, Western Michigan hit on a few big plays down the field. The story was different after the halftime break. The Hawkeyes played a much stronger form of defense in the third and fourth quarter, limiting the Broncos to just 35 yards on 23 plays. That helped the Hawkeyes to winning those quarters 27-0 in a 41-10 victory at Kinnick Stadium.
How many snaps did each of Iowa’s defensive players log in the 57 snaps they faced. We break it down by position.
DEFENSIVE LINE
Joe Evans – 37 snaps
Logan Lee – 33 snaps
Yahya Black – 30 snaps
Aaron Graves – 30 snaps
Deontae Craig – 30 snaps
Ethan Hurkett – 27 snaps
Jeremiah Pittman – 21 snaps
Max Lllewellyn – 14 snaps
Brian Allen – 3 snaps
Caden Crawford – 3 snaps
Analysis – Last week the rotation was very tight along the defensive line. This week, we saw more snaps for a player like Max Lllewellyn, who didn’t get any against Iowa State. Good to see Caden Crawford and Brian Allen get out there late in the game for valuable reps.
LINEBACKERS
Jay Higgins – 52 snaps
Nick Jackson – 48 snaps
Kyler Fisher – 8 snaps
Jaden Harrell – 5 snaps
Karson Sharar – 5 snaps
Analysis – As usual, Jay Higgins and Nick Jackson led the way in snaps and they also scored very well in terms of grades with PFF. Good to see the future at linebacker in Jaden Harrell and Karson Sharar, get some snaps.
DEFENSIVE BACKS
Xavier Nwankpa – 57 snaps
Quinn Schulte – 52 snaps
Cooper DeJean – 52 snaps
Jermari Harris – 52 snaps
Deshaun Lee – 6 snaps
TJ Hall – 5 snaps
Koen Entringer – 5 snaps
Brenden Desfernandes – 5 snaps
Analysis – It was interesting that Xavier Nwankpa moved to free safety for the final five snaps with Koen Entringer at strong safety. This was Jermari Harris first game in over a year and he played 52 snaps.
