— While Gamecocks fans were disappointed that four-star running back Daniel Hill did not follow through with his planned August 23 announcement, the program nonetheless still has an outstanding chance to eventually land him.
It’s not as if Alabama would have given up here, either, had Hill gone ahead and pulled the trigger in favor of USC.
If you’re Shane Beamer’s staff, of course you would rather have Hill residing on your commitment list. He’s spoken of taking more visits this season, and that will surely cause some consternation.
Still, all of the reasons that Hill has been so high on South Carolina all along are still in place. In talking to multiple sources that have communicated with the Mississippi product recently, the thought is that USC remains in the best position.
If Carolina could pull in Hill to pair with Matthew Fuller, who’s off to a big start this season, that would represent three straight running back signees that rank as four-star prospects.
— Wide receiver is a position in which there are more questions as to how the board could shake out. It’s a key spot in this class, given the personnel that the Gamecocks are set to lose following the 2023 season.
One-time USC leans Keylen Adams and Jonathan Paylor obviously committed to other programs in the ACC.
Both of those recruitments carried an NIL component, and not a single game of college football has been played by any of the involved teams. There’s nothing very concrete to track here right now, but we have been told more than once to just keep an eye on them throughout the season.
*** One name that the staff is keeping an eye on is Savannah (Georgia) prospect Jaylen Hampton, who’s currently committed to Western Kentucky. He scored four touchdowns in his season opener and has a nice blend of size (6-foot-2), speed, and skill.
— USC has a very impressive offensive line class in place, but the staff may look to add another to that tally if it’s a good one.

Jordan Seaton would definitely qualify. On3 recently scouted him and noted that he’s going to be a contender for five-star status.
This is an example of how landing a five-star – Dylan Stewart – caught the attention of another prospect. Not long after Stewart pledged to the Gamecocks, Seaton expressed interest in making a visit to Columbia.
The IMG Academy product, who is originally from the DMV, has a busy fall scheduled. He plans trips to LSU, Florida, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Oregon, and South Carolina.
— We are continuing to keep an eye on North Carolina’s D’Nas White at defensive tackle. This is a spot in which the Gamecocks are unlikely to sign a high-volume class; it could end up being one or two guys.
Florida’s Keon Webb is a player that the staff brought in for the cookout event in July and will continue to monitor his progress during his senior season. There’s no offer out yet to Webb.
— We have mentioned a couple of four-star targets at the EDGE position previously, one committed to another program and one who’s wide open.
Kam Fountain committed to Southern Cal this summer but remains in contact with the USC staff. He also spoke recently with QB commitment Dante Reno. The relationship with assistant coach Sterling Lucas here is really good.
While a date is not locked in, the expectation is that Fountain will make his way back to the Palmetto State for an official visit this season.
Ernest Willor keeps his recruitment fairly quiet and is not a prolific visitor. From what we hear, a trip to Columbia at some point is still possible. Willor, every time we have spoken with him personally, has left the door open. If that happens, it may become a storyline to really monitor.
The portal or JUCO route will also remain considerations for South Carolina here.
— To reiterate what we have said previously, the recruitment of four-star defensive back Jalewis Solomon went down to the wire. There’s still plenty of reason to believe that South Carolina remains a player in this one, too. Solomon keeps in touch with the staff regularly. This is a storyline that will be worth watching throughout the seaosn.
Kam Mikell, who has previously expressed interest in playing wide receiver at the college level, is another prospect we will continue to monitor. Georgia has seemed to be the front runner, but Mikell simply seems uninterested in making an early decision. That’s left the door open for other schools.
