Because there could be a possibility of legal and/or NCAA action(s) pertaining to this matter, I’m going to refrain from reporting many additional details as to the circumstances of the departure.
What is important to know is that this is not a situation in which, for example, Shane Beamer made a call to dismiss Edwards based on performance.
I can also say it’s accurate that the impetus for this was related to something that happened in the course of the recruiting process.
The decision was made official on Tuesday afternoon.
So, what does this mean for the program?

In college football, the director of player personnel position has evolved in the last several years.
At most programs, it’s much more than just scouting and evaluating players. Usually, these guys are also involved in building relationships with prospects. And in 2024, player personnel/recruiting roles also require a strong working knowledge of the NIL landscape. In my opinion, Edwards proved himself valuable in many of the Gamecocks’ recruiting battles.
There are a couple of interesting aspects about a replacement for this position.
First, who will it be?
We don’t know the answer to that question yet, as multiple sources have told GamecockCentral.com that the search is ongoing.
To be clear, we have not confirmed any conversations that have taken place or names that are firmly in the mix just yet.
One name that some industry sources have told us Shane Beamer could opt to speak with is Darren Uscher at Oregon. He is a South Carolina graduate who spent time as a marketing intern in Columbia and has worked his way up in the football personnel/recruiting world. He’s been at Boise State, Auburn, Oregon, and UCLA for a short stint.
The second aspect to watch is whether or not Beamer opts to make more than one hire and/or restructure the way this portion of his program runs.
GamecockCentral.com has been told that Beamer will have the funding he needs to make the hire he wants, even if that means hiring additional personnel.
Because of everything that’s involved in the player personnel space nowadays – evaluating, communicating, transfer portal, NIL – many programs have opted to onboard additional personnel to spread out responsibilities.
Just as a couple examples, Tennessee has a “Director of Recruiting” and a “Director of Scouting”, and those separate from other roles like on-campus recruiting. Oregon has a “Director of Player Personnel” and “Director of Recruiting Strategy”, among other positions.
At one point, Taylor Edwards had an assistant DPP, Drew Hixson. Once Hixson left the program to take a job away from football, the responsibilities were really just split among the rest of the staff.
We don’t yet know what Beamer may be thinking on this front.
Stay tuned to GamecockCentral.com as more information becomes available on this important hire.
