Insider Notes: The latest on top LSU targets

Insider Notes: The latest on top LSU targets

The LSU football staff continues to build on the visitor list for the Bayou Splash recruiting event at the end of July.

There are a handful of top targets with decision dates now locked in, with the most recent prospect to nail down a date being a major defensive back target out of the Sunshine State.

Here’s the latest buzz from the recruiting trail.

Insider Notes: The latest on top LSU targets

*** Florida four-star cornerback Cai Bates will announce his college decision on July 28, and LSU, Tennessee and Alabama are among the schools still in contention. I went into the summer months with the feeling the Tigers would be the team to beat, and LSU landed his final official visit in June. Where do things stand now? After making a round of calls on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning, my feelings are shifting. If the decision were today, I would lean Tennessee. The Volunteers have been able to carry the momentum from June’s official, and from speaking with sources, I get the sense Tennessee is out front. LSU very much wants Bates in the 2024 class, and we will see if the Tigers can close things out in the coming weeks. If not, all eyes turn to the Lone Star State’s Kobe Black, who is set to make an official visit to LSU in September and is being pushed to visit for the Bayou Splash at the end of the month.

*** There’s growing optimism among a couple LSU sources that the Tigers will have Louisiana’s three uncommitted targets on campus for the Bayou Splash in defensive lineman Dominick McKinley, linebacker Tylen Singleton and defensive back Wardell Mack. Other teams are still pushing to get those guys onto campus, but LSU is buckling in to ensure they host the trio for the Bayou Splash. With Singleton and Mack set to make decisions ahead of their senior seasons, visits to Baton Rouge before then are a must.

*** We have confirmed through more sources that Duncanville five-star edge rusher Colin Simmons will be in Baton Rouge for the Bayou Splash, which is huge. The staff will also have Duncanville five-star wide receiver Dakorien Moore on campus, giving the staff another visit from one of the top 2025 targets on the board. The guy we continue to monitor in terms of a potential visit is Duncanville four-star running back Caden Durham. I mentioned this on The Bengal Tiger Recruiting Podcast, but I’ve heard Durham and his family might all be in attendance at his sister’s national track competition that weekend, which would mean he wouldn’t visit any schools. I’ll continue to try to nail down his plans as we get closer to next weekend’s event.
