Insider Notes: Final week of Georgia spring drills begins

Four weeks of Georgia spring practice is in the books and now we march on toward the G-Day Spring scrimmage. Before we get there, DawgsHQ has some notes to unload and we do that below.

I have gotten a lot of questions about the quarterback position. It has been this way for a little while but it recently picked up because there seems to be something going around about Brock Vandagriff taking reps away from Carson Beck and that he’s trending to become the starter.

Vandagriff has had a good spring and it really started to pick up during the second week. No doubt about it. I’d say he has definitely closed the gap with Beck and is in the thick of this race. But Beck still has the edge and I’ve had multiple sources tell me that it’s a fairly significant edge at the moment. Vandagriff is trending and moving in the right direction. Beck is also getting better. I think G-Day will ultimately be weighed pretty heavily because how those guys react in front of that many people will be interesting.

Don’t be surprised if we are talking about Georgia’s running back position in December and we point back to this spring. The reason I say that is because the buzz has really picked up since Thursday about Branson Robinson and how much he has grown. Confidence and playing fast were issues for most of last season but he has overcome those. One source told me that his play and physicality on the field, in all aspects, is matching up with his physical prowess now.

With that said, I do think there’s going to be a point this year where Roderick Robinson is going to be called upon. It might be for a game or two like Branson Robinson last year but he has also had a good spring.

The receiver I’ve heard the most about of late is Rara Thomas. I didn’t hear much early in spring and, from piecing some information together, I think it’s because his head might have been spinning. I’m pretty sure that Kirby Smart even made mention of how much he had to learn because the offense at Mississippi State was so different.

Well, that learning curve has flattened out a bit and he is benefitting from it. One source told me that he’s more athletic and explosive than they expected. With that said, Dominic Lovett was doing some exciting stuff back in February and he continues to do so. I’m really interested to see what he’s able to do at G-Day.

Not much to say about the offensive line that hasn’t already been said. There are a lot of guys who can play winning football for the Bulldogs right now. Left tackle battle is still ongoing with Earnest Greene and Austin Blaske. I don’t expect it to be settled any time soon. Monroe Freeling has made some strides the past couple of weeks.

Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins has been at another level the past couple of practices per what I’ve been hearing. I reported on him having some really impressive flashes prior to Thursday’s scrimmage. I reported that he had a great scrimmage that day. I’m told he was really good again Saturday.

There’s a long way to go before starting lineups and roles get set for the 2023 season but from what I’ve heard lately, I think theres a good chance Georgia rolls with more than two cornerbacks. Daylen Everette, Nyland Green and Julian Humphrey have all been really good at times this spring. Kamari Lassiter has one of those jobs locked down. I don’t want to make it sound like it’s all sunshine and rainbows here because none of those three guys has really taken it and ran with it this spring. But those who’ve seen them in action think that Georgia has three guys who can play winning football and two more — Smoke Bouie and A.J. Harris — who shouldn’t be counted out.
