Inside Vincent Shavers commitment to the Miami Hurricanes

Inside Vincent Shavers commitment to the Miami Hurricanes

While his commitment may have just recently become official, the idea of becoming a Miami Hurricane has long been on the mind of Miami (Fla.) Central three-star linebacker Vincent Shavers.

The eighth pledge and first linebacker in the Hurricanes’ 2024 class has always wanted to play in the orange and green, so when he received an offer last week his commitment was kind of a foregone conclusion. But his most recent visit to Coral Gables cemented the decision.

“The one moment I knew was when I went on my visit with Ezekiel Marcelin and we had a conversation with coach Dnic (Derek Nicholson),” Shavers told CaneSport. “At that moment, I felt that I was ready to lock in and be a Miami Hurricane.”

Although the Hurricanes may seem to have just recently become the frontrunner in Shavers recruitment, in reality Miami has been actively recruiting the 6-foot, 205-pound prospect since his freshman year at Miami Pace, which also played a big role in his decision to become a ‘Cane.

“The Hurricanes have been recruiting me since my ninth-grade year, so it’s like a brotherhood and a family,” said Shavers, who recently transferred to Miami Central. “I made this decision with my coaches and family. It was a dream come true with me committing to the ‘Canes.”

While Nicholson is new to Miami, having joined the staff in February, he has played a significant part in Shavers’ commitment as his primary recruiter throughout the recent part of the process. Throughout the spring, Nicholson made his way to Miami Central to see Shavers, and their bond has only grown stronger over time.

“He’s like family because me and coach Nicholson have a great bond,” Shavers said. “He checks on me every day, making sure I’m good and okay. He’s always asking me if I’m ready to be a ‘Cane, which gets me fired up. I’m ready to be a ‘Cane.”

Despite his commitment, Nicholson has preached to Shavers that the job isn’t over now that he’s committed, but that it’s time to crank it up a level.

“He always tells me to keep working,” Shavers added. “Since I’m committed now, he tells me not to take any days off or slack up. He tells me not to get too comfortable or think you’re too good. Always push myself and get better every day.”

Shavers wants to see more South Florida athletes stay home

So far, the Hurricanes have eight pledges in the 2024 class, with Shavers, four-star wide receiver Chance Robinson, and three-star running back Chris Wheatley-Humphrey all hailing from Broward and Dade counties, respectively.

With the class beginning to take shape and the official visit season just around the horizon, Shavers would like to see more locals remain home and he has two South Florida athletes on his wish list for the Miami 2024 class.

The first is four-star safety Zaquan Patterson of Chaminade-Madonna, while the second is Patterson’s teammate, four-star wide receiver Joshisa Trader. According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, Miami has a 91% chance of landing Patterson and a 92.3% chance of landing Trader.

“Zaquan (Patterson) and Jojo (Trader),” Shavers said. “Come be a ‘Cane and let’s be great. Come make the crib great again.”
