Inside The Lines: Get to know Miami commit Daylen Russell

It has now been almost two months since 2024 Miami (Fla.) Columbus defensive lineman Daylen Russell announced his pledge to the Hurricanes, and every day since, he has woken up thankful that he is a Miami commit.
The South Florida native who chose to stay home and play for the Hurricanes and has long dreamed of playing for Miami will soon have the chance to make an impact on and off the field in Coral Gables.
“It feels good, you know because I get to give back to the community and things like that whenever I can,” Russell said in an Inside The Lines interview with CaneSport. ”I just love that I have the opportunity to put on for my city and change The U around.”
Russell, who chose the Hurricanes over the likes of Nebraska, UCF, Florida State, and others, decided to stay in Miami for several reasons, but having the chance to be close to his family was at the top of his list.
The opportunity to stay close to home, help raise his 12-year-old brother Devin Russell, and show him the ropes while playing college ball is one he couldn’t pass up.
“The biggest reason was mainly me staying with my family,” Russell said. “I have a little brother that looks up to me, and I can’t leave him. I’ve got to show him the way and show him the path.”
Russell talks the Columbus and Hurricanes connection
While several well-known alums, like Alonzo Highsmith, Mario Cristobal, and multiple current Hurricanes football players, have made the jump from Miami Columbus High School to the University of Miami, Russell aspires to be the next in line.
“It’s very special, and I played with some of those guys as a freshman,” Russell said. “I know how they work, the hard work they put in, and everything like that. I’m just ready to get to it.”
Although his arrival to Miami is still over a year away, Russell is excited about the opportunity ahead and is ready to get after it in the orange and green.

“(Miami is getting) a hard-working man,” Russell said. “I come into practice willing to work, and I come into the weight room willing to work. Every day like that, I’m going to keep working. I’m going to work until I can’t anymore.”
On this latest installment of Inside The Lines, Izubee Charles goes one-on-one with Russell as they discuss a handful of intriguing topics, including his junior season, Miami’s 2024 recruiting class, and more.
