Inside the commitment: Trent Noah

Inside the commitment: Trent Noah

South Carolina got more good news Sunday in what was a positive week for the Gamecocks men’s basketball program in Trent Noah.

They added a commitment from the 2024 shooting guard, who announced his decision Sunday afternoon and added a second piece to South Carolina’s class.

Here’s how South Carolina landed him and what he can bring once he arrives on campus.

The recruitment

Things went relatively quickly for Noah with the Gamecocks scouting him a ton over the summer and began to ramp up his recruitment. He was getting interest from schools like Western Kentucky, Richmond, Butler, Seton Hall, Saint Louis, Stanford and others but South Carolina quickly jumped to the top of the list.

Lamont Paris and his staff have ties to the Midwest and recruiting in that area and the Gamecocks were at a lot of his summer games scouting him.

Noah–who On3 ranks as the No. 146 player in the 2024 class and the second-best prospect in Kentucky–was immediately intrigued by interest from an SEC school and clicked with the staff.

He came on an official visit the weekend of Sept. 22 where he got to watch a workout, spend time with the staff and see the system and program up close and personal. That was the final domino to fall, and Noah committed soon after to the Gamecocks and made his announcement Sunday afternoon.

South Carolina was able to sell him on the ability to come in and compete for playing time, fitting into the system and how his skill set can be used in the SEC.

Looking ahead, South Carolina has a ton of older guards on the roster. Ta’Lon Cooper is in his final year of eligibility, Meechie Johnson is entering year four of college and Jacobi Wright will have just one year of eligibility when Noah arrives on campus.

So there’s a shot, if Noah can continue his development, for him to chisel out some sort of role for the Gamecocks early in his career.

What he brings

South Carolina really likes the skill Noah showcased during his summer session and thinks he can be an impact, winning player during his time with the Gamecocks.

Noah shot over 42 percent from three on the Adidas circuit and one source said Noah has a “really good feel for the game and makes plays to win.” The staff likes his size, his basketball IQ and he has the ability to shoot the ball.

Paris values skill heavily in recruiting, which is why South Carolina thinks he can fit well into the system once he arrives on campus.

They’ll likely ask him to be the shooting guard or bump at times maybe to the small forward and allow him to be a floor spacer once he gets to campus.

What Noah gives South Carolina is what the staff considers to be a really good young core. Along with Noah, the Gamecocks are excited about the freshmen and sophomores on the roster like Collin Murray-Boyles, Arden Conyers, Morris Ugusuk and sophomore Zach Davis, who’s reportedly taken a step this offseason.

South Carolina also loves what it’s getting in fellow 2024 commitment in Okku Federiko and 2025 commit Hayden Assemian. On3 ranks both inside the top 150 currently.
