Inside the commitment: Kobby Sakyi-Prah
Roswell (Ga.) three-star EDGE Kobby Sakyi-Prah announced a commitment to the Gamecocks Monday afternoon after visiting the program for his official visit this weekend.
GamecockCentral provides an in-depth analysis of the pickup below.
The recruitment
Sakyi-Prah’s recruitment took off following his sophomore season when he landed offers from Southern Cal, Louisville, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Indiana, and Georgia Tech, among others.
An injury cut short his junior season and possibly slowed his recruitment but South Carolina jumped in with an offer in January, though he was still under the radar in terms of prospects we were closely tracking.
Sterling Lucas and the Gamecocks saw Sakyi-Prah in person during the spring and seemed to turn up the heat with that latest evaluation, or at least his recruitment landed more on our radar as one to watch in May when Saky-Prah set an official visit to South Carolina for June.
He took an official to Indiana and then to South Carolina. He was supposed to take an official visit to Mississippi State as well but committed to the Gamecocks on Monday before doing so.
The evaluation
Sakyi-Prah moved to the United States from Ghana when he was nine years old, I’m told, and is far from a finished product as a player but South Carolina likes his upside.
Again, the Gamecocks saw him in person in May and he’s seen as a prospect with athleticism, a quick first step, and long arms who has the physical traits that SEC programs covet at the position. He’s a bit raw and he’ll have to develop but he can bend off the edge and I understand South Carolina is excited to have him in the class due to those measurables.
On3’s Rusty Mansell, who follows the state of Georgia better than anyone, highlighted Sakyi-Prah on Twitter during the spring, mentioning him as a prospect whose recruitment could take off to another level. Listed at 6-foot-3, 210-pounds by On3, I’m told that’s more like 6-foot-3.5, 220-pounds.
As a sophomore, Sakyi-Prah accumulated 89 tackles, 11 TFL, 9 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles.
A three-star prospect according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average for the four major recruiting media sites, he is the No. 742 overall prospect and No. 65 EDGE in the country.
What’s next?
South Carolina has two EDGE commits in the class with Sakyi-Prah joining Sumter’s Anthony Addison on the commit list but the Gamecocks aren’t done yet.
The Gamecocks are the favorite for Hoover (Ala.) Thompson four-star EDGE Jared Smith and the feeling internally is that they’re in a better spot with five-star Southern Cal commit Isaiah Gibson than most people think, though that’s going to be a battle to the end, with multiple blue bloods heavily involved.
South Carolina will also look to make a move with Greensboro (N.C.) Grimsley four-star EDGE Bryce Davis when he officials in two weeks and has an offer out to in-state EDGE Jaquavious Dodd.
With strong early returns on freshman Dylan Stewart but Kyle Kennard only having one year of eligibility left, the staff appears to want to bring in a fairly big EDGE class this cycle that will ideally feature a mix of high-upside development prospects combined with another potential instant impact player.
