Inside the buzz around 5-star EDGE Colin Simmons

If there’s a No. 1 need in LSU’s 2024 recruiting efforts, it’s an elite edge rusher. Duncanville (Tex.) star Colin Simmons hinted at a commitment date “coming soon” on Twitter on Wednesday.

The push from the Tigers has been a strong one as this shapes up to be an LSU-Texas battle in the end. If his timeline is indeed trending to sooner rather than later, which sources are saying could be the case, that’s good news for LSU and Texas.

Both schools have felt good about their stance. The Longhorns in particular have held buzz since hosting Simmons for an official visit in June. Now, LSU is set to get the No. 1 EDGE prospect in America on campus next week.

Texas A&M is hanging around as well and could host Simmons, but he’s headed to Baton Rouge and that could very well be the only visit for him and his family during next week’s recruiting period.

Behind the scenes, LSU is surging for Simmons, it appears. Texas, which needs to keep the Five Star Plus+ prospect in-state in a big way, is going to swing back though.

Both programs have a need here. Both have had confidence in getting him, especially as of late. It’s Texas that leads the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine though.

What’ll be key over the coming weeks if a decision date is locked in before his senior season is trying to weed out how this one is going to go. For Texas, the buzz has centered around them since the official visit.

LSU’s expected Simmons for the Bayou Splash for quite some time, but over the last week, things have intensified on LSU’s side of things in terms of confidence in landing him.

If it is indeed closing time, this is that time for LSU’s side to flex its muscles. Texas has held much of the confidence lately, but it’s the Tigers who’ve piled together a big push lately.

Will that be enough? We’ll soon find out a commitment date from Simmons, and it’s trending toward being soon.

It then boils down to those final closing arguments, which for LSU will come next Friday. There’s going to be positioning behind the scenes as well by many on both sides, looking for that final edge.

It’s too close to call right now, but over the last 48 hours, there’s been a billowing amount of confidence from some involved on LSU’s end. If it ends up going the Tigers’ way, we can point to this final run as to how LSU won out on Simmons.

If Simmons heads to Austin, the Longhorns had this one wrapped up back in June, and that confidence would certainly be validated.

But for now, LSU’s the one that’s making the big push. We’ll await Simmons’ decision date and then nail down who gets Simmons into its class.
