Initial offensive observations from Texas’ first fall practice of 2024

Inside Texas was on-hand for UT’s first football practice of the 2024 season in Austin on Wednesday. From the offensive line, pass catchers, and QB play, this year’s version of the Longhorns is looking good.

OFFENSIVE LINE

The strength of the team looks pretty damn strong.

First team (LT to RT) = Kelvin Banks-Hayden Conner-Jake Majors-DJ Campbell-Cam Williams

Second team (LT to RT) = Trevor Goosby-Cole Hutson-Connor Robertson-Neto Umeozulu-Andre Cojoe

The blocking drill lined up:

Banks/Williams, Majors/Robertson, Conner/Campbell, Hutson/Umeozulu, Kibble/Baker, Goosby/Cojoe

Of Note: Daniel Cruz looks slim and trim. Streamlined, sharp.

Trevor Goosby just moves people. Neto has such a quick first step. Brandon Baker finishes.

RUNNING BACK

In Order: CJ Baxter, Jaydon Blue, Tre Wisner, Jerrick Gibson, Christian Clark

Tashard Choice was hype today. You can hear him getting onto Jerrick Gibson to get after it, then turn around and praise Baxter for hitting the hole low.

Not much to glean after Day 1 here, but Baxter looks like a machine.

WIDE RECEIVER

Some notes on the pass-catchers: Silas Bolden is quicker like quick. Plays immediately.

Johntay Cook had a few nice catches with the 1s.

Ryan Wingo has big hands and a big catch radius.

Isaiah Bond had a few drops, but then had maybe the catch of the day, snagging an overthrown fastball from Ewers across the middle.

QUARTERBACKS

First team = Quinn Ewers. He’s ready.

Second team = Arch Manning. Also ready. You could hear AJ Milwee screaming “let’s go superstar.”

Third team = Trey Owens. The freshman made some nice throws early, and had a few sail on him. Call it first day jitters because there was velocity coming off his right shoulder.

ODDS and ENDS from SECONDARY

Jordan Johnson-Rubell looked sharp. Little wasted motion, quick feet, and change of direction.

Michael Taaffe is that guy. Leader’ing that secondary.

Xavier Filsaime is the size of a linebacker. Just big safety with speed.
