In-state QB talks Gamecocks offer

In-state QB talks Gamecocks offer

Will Wilson grew up paying plenty of attention to the South Carolina Gamecocks program.

He was just a young child when his father, Walt Wilson, coached Alshon Jeffery at Calhoun County High.

Fast-forward more than 10 years, and now the 2025 quarterback at Richland Northeast has an offer from head coach Shane Beamer, who recruited Jeffery to Columbia as an assistant under Steve Spurrier.

“It first came about when Coach (Dowell) Loggains came to see my throw, came to practice Wednesday,” Wilson told GamecockCentral.com. “Through all this time, he just wanted to see how the ball came off my hand, how I threw it.”

Loggains evidently liked what he saw out of Wilson during the local workout.

“After he saw me throw, the next day, he texted my dad and then I gave him a call. He offered. It just means a lot to be offered by your home town, a big-time SEC school. I was excited about it,” Wilson explained.

Since he’s had the opportunity to get to know Loggains a bit, the rising junior passer has been impressed by Loggains and his offensive mind.

“It’s a great fit for a guy like me. Just the way he (Loggains) Is coming in, if you can play you can play. If he wants you he’s going to go get you,” said Wilson. “He’s a very cool guy, very straight forward and easy to talk to.”

This summer, the Palmetto State prospect will work out at the Gamecocks’ camp on June 2. He will follow that with camp trips to Duke (June 3), TCU (June 5-7), Clemson (June 9), NC State (June 17), and Alabama (June 24). A June trip to Virginia Tech is likely, too.

“The biggest thing is, I want to take a couple visits, see how I like the place,” Wilson said of a possible decision timeline. “Maybe sometime around August, midseason, something like that. When I’m ready, I’m ready, and I’ll know.”

Several more Power 5 programs in addition to the Gamecocks have offered Wilson: Arkansas, Cincinnati, Duke, NC State, Penn State, TCU, and Virginia Tech.

Quarterbacks coach/offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains also extended scholarships to Ohio passer Ryan Montgomery and Mississippi’s Deuce Knight on Thursday night.

USC landed top-100 quarterback LaNorris Sellers in the 2023 cycle and have another four-star committed for the ’24 class in Dante Reno.

South Carolina also has a trio of 2026 quarterback offers out as of Saturday in Nashville’s Jared Curtis, Alabama’s Landon Duckworth, and Georgia’s Julian Lewis.

During the 2022 season, Wilson threw for 1,795 yards and ran for an additional 705 on the ground. He scored 28 total touchdowns as a sophomore.
