In-state ATH Xavier Newsom talks early Michigan interest, offseason visits

Michigan was the first Division I school to offer On300 Detroit (Mich.) Martin Luther King athlete Xavier Newsom.

“It was a true blessing because I used to watch Michigan all the time growing up,” Newsom said. “It was definitely a true blessing.”

Along with the Wolverines, colleges are starting to take notice of Newsom’s raw ability at both the tight end and defensive end positions. Standing 6-foot-5 and weighing 220 pounds, Newsom’s offers have all come this offseason.

Penn State, Pitt, Marshall, West Virginia and a trio of MAC schools have pulled the trigger on the sophomore as well.

“My recruitment has been good,” Newsom said. “I’ve been enjoing going up to the colleges and seeing how they look and feel. Also, seeing football practice and how I would fit in.”

While still new to the recruitment process, Newsom has gone on a couple of visits when he’s not committed to playing on the national 7v7 circuit with the 15u SoundMind SoundBody team. Checking out different schools have allowed Newsom to build new connections with different coaching staffs.

“I’ve seen and being taught how I can get off of tight ends and other stuff at these practices,” Newsom said. “A lot of things.”

Newsom has made two unofficial visits to Michigan going back to late January. He first toured the facilities during one of the team’s Junior Day events and later returned in mid-March to watch spring practice. The ideal plan, according to Newsom, will be for him to come back to Ann Arbor next month and camp.

Both appearances gave Newsom personal time with Michigan tight ends coach Grant Newsome.

“The visits to Michigan were nice and I will go up there sometime again soon,” Newsom said. “Coach Newsome was a good coach. He walked us through film and everything. We also bonded a little bit too.”

Area recruiter and co-defensive coordinator Steve Clinkscale is also leading the way for Newsom and his King teammates. 2025 EDGE Willie Fletcher also possesses a U-M offer. The Wolverines view Newsom’s athleticism as a potential addition on either side of the ball.

“Coach Clink is my guy,” Newsom said. “(The Michigan coaches) saw my size and how well I catch the ball. Everything.”

Newsom is listed as the No. 265 overall prospect and No. 16 tight end in the country, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He’s also the No. 4 in-state recruit in the 2025 class.
