Husker players to watch during Nebraska’s Red-White Spring Game
Nebraska’s Red-White spring game has finally arrived. From the new coaches and systems to honoring coach Frank Solich, there is a lot to look forward to.
Husker Head Coach Matt Rhule and his staff brought in many new players that fans will see for the first time on the field. Along with the newcomers, Nebraska has returning players with much to prove as well.
The scrimmage starts at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 22 at Memorial Stadium. The Big Ten Network will also televise the game.
Here is a list of some players to watch during the spring game:
QBs Jeff Sims and Heinrich Haarberg:
Georgia Tech transfer Jeff Sims has been taking snaps with the No. 1 team this spring. Sophomore Heinrich Haarberg entered the chat and seems to be the No. 2 play-caller for the spring. He’s made sure to keep the QB battle alive and well this spring.
The quarterback battle will heat up even more in the fall when Nebraska’s returning 2022 QB1 Casey Thompson is fully healthy.
During the spring game, Sims will have his first opportunity to show Husker nation just how well he can run the offense. As for Haarberg, this is a great chance to establish himself in the QB battle.
TEs Thomas Fidone and Arik Gilbert:
After two major knee injuries, tight end Thomas Fidone is back. The 6-foot-6, 235-pound sophomore will get to play in his first spring game on Saturday. Georgia transfer Arik Gilbert will join him at tight end. If the duo plays up to its potential and stays healthy, they’ll be a dominant pair.
WR Billy Kemp IV:
Over the last two seasons, Nebraska’s top wide receiver has been a transfer. Billy Kemp IV, a Virginia transfer, could have to tools to add another season to the list. Not only is Kemp a threat downfield, but he also has experience in punt returning and has been practicing there as well.
He has a list of experienced wide receivers around him including Marcus Washington, Joshua Fleeks and Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda. Garcia-Castaneda and WR Zavier Betts are both players to watch after their return to Nebraska.
LBs MJ Sherman and Chief Borders:
Linebackers MJ Sherman and Chief Borders could have a big role this fall. Sherman, a Georgia transfer, and Borders, a Florida transfer, have both found a place in Nebraska’s 3-3-5 defense. Both have been entrusted with pass-rushing. The LB transfers both have versatile roles in this defense. Pay attention to how they are used but also the Huskers’ pass rush.
Offensive tackle Bryce Benhart:
Rhule recently called right tackle Bryce Benhart “an NFL player.” After the O-line and Benhart faced a lot of scrutiny over the last couple of seasons, some Husker fans were surprised by the compliment. He’ll be able to show why he earned the comment during the spring game. Focus on how Benhart and the other tackles handle the pass rush and how the line moves the ball.
Nebraska O-lineman Bryce Benhart is “an NFL player,” Matt Rhule says
