Hugh Freeze close to finalizing QB pecking order entering season: ‘I know in my mind where we’re headed’

AUBURN — Payton Thorne is QB1. That much has been clear since spring camp. The question is who will be QB2, QB3 and QB4 when the season starts?

Hugh Freeze says he and his coaching staff have an idea and will let his quarterbacks know his decision soon.

“Yeah, I haven’t told the quarterbacks yet, so I won’t say, but I kind of know in my mind where we’re headed next week, but I’d rather tell them before I say it,” Freeze said on Friday.

“I was going to get through tomorrow, but I kind of feel like I know where we’re headed with the reps and I’ll let you guys know next week for sure, but I’d like to tell them first. But I do think we’re all on the same page, (Derrick) Nix and Kent (Austin), on who is going to get the majority of the second.”

Thorne has been consistently praised by Freeze during preseason camp and earned more compliments as camp nears an end.

“It’s been a really impressive week for his understanding and being accurate,” Freeze said.

Hank Brown, Holden Geriner and Walker White will fall into the second, third and fourth spots in Auburn’s quarterback rotation.

Freeze said earlier in camp that Thorne was enjoying “really good moments,” and was fairly happy with the quarterback room in totality.
