Hugh Freeze advocates for cancer screenings, opens up on his treatment plan and outlook

As Hugh Freeze wrestles with prostate cancer, he’s using his platform to inform others about preventative measures that can be taken. It’s a serious risk for many men.

On Monday, the Auburn head coach joined The Paul Finebaum Show. And the last question from the show’s host was about his cancer diagnosis.

“First I would say I appreciate, you sent me a nice text also, thank you,” Freeze told Finebaum. “So many people have reached out and been very gracious and kind with prayers and thoughts. I’m certainly just one of many that are dealing with this, and hopefully my case can bring awareness where everybody, every man is getting himself checked for sure.”

For his part, Hugh Freeze has been pretty proactive about his health screenings. It’s one of the reasons the cancer was caught when it was.

“Luckily I do that every six months, and it’s not a word you ever want to hear, Paul,” Freeze said. “It hits you in the face pretty hard. And it certainly makes you assess where you are in your life. I do think it’s made me a better coach. I don’t know how to really describe that, but it’s made me appreciate the days I have more and the staff that I have. And obviously my family is so close. And us all being together is very special here in Auburn.”

That’s not to say there aren’t challenges for Hugh Freeze. Fighting cancer is never easy.

On top of the physical risk from the cancer, many other things come into full focus. Your whole life goes under the microscope, Freeze explained.

“The hardest part is really thinking about your kids and grandkids and when you hear that word, all right, how do I, what do I do to ensure I have time with them that God would allow?” Freeze said. “So Jill and I have just been collecting all the information and obviously praying a lot and seeking what we think God’s plan is for this.

“It’s obviously part of the story he wants to write in my life, so we want to do that well and be faithful to walk through this journey in a manner that obviously shows our players that he practices what he preaches. And now’s a chance for me to do that for all and hopefully bring awareness to all men, make sure they get themselves checked.”

But once again, Hugh Freeze circled back around to advocacy. He wants men to understand the real risks of contracting prostate cancer and going undiagnosed.

In the meantime, he’s readying his own treatment plan as he looks to take on the diagnosis. It isn’t easy.

“But we’re really close, Paul, to having an idea of a treatment plan,” Freeze said. “Thankful for all the doctors and everybody’s insight that has been so incredibly kind to us.”
