How the OU Cheetah linebacker spot simply had too many riches
Spring football is done for OU. The transfer portal has long been closed. You can start digging in as to what the 2024 version of the Oklahoma Sooners is going to be.
We’re going to take a look back at everything we saw from Brent Venables’ group in the spring as Team 130 embarks on its SEC journey.
The good, the bad and everything in between. It’s time to officially become SEC ready.
What we learned at OU: Cheetah LB
Too much talent for just one spot. You wondered if something was going to give at some of the defensive positions. It’s certainly something we would have never said about an OU defense under the previous regime, but that’s where we’re at in 2024.
The breakout star of 2023 was Kendel Dolby, who did a masterful job of holding down the fort. Justin Harrington missed the majority of the season with the torn ACL. And Dasan McCullough simply wasn’t himself dealing with injuries.
So Dolby is back and ready to do what he needs to do in 2024. McCullough sounds all sorts of determined to make this season his best one yet.
And then the name du jour we started to hear in spring was Samuel Omosigho. Just like that, the room became too full. All these guys for just one spot?
Harrington became the odd man out. No ill will or anything, but Harrington entered the transfer portal and has transferred to Washington.
That can happen when you have too much depth. And that’s just never a bad thing.
OU is not hurting at the Cheetah spot. What we’ve learned more than anything? When someone’s number gets called there, they’re ready. This should be a highly productive position once again.
Quotable
“Frustrated. I would say frustrated with the injuries. Even going back to Week 1, I got hurt the second play of the game against Arkansas State. Had that high ankle sprain. A lot of frustration going on with me last year. Leaving that behind, looking forward and this year is going to be one of those years.” – McCullough on his 2023 season
