How Notre Dame QB commit CJ Carr carved up Brighton (Mich.) High defense in his senior season debut
Notre Dame quarterback commit CJ Carr stepped onto the Brighton (Mich.) High Stadium turf and sliced through the humidity and opposing Bulldogs defense. And the four-star signal caller from Saline (Mich.) High did it efficiently and effectively.
The 6-foot-2 ½, 195-pound passer guided the Hornets to a 42-3 victory on a hot and muggy Thursday night in his senior season debut. It began with a surgical effort that included Carr, the On3 Industry Ranking’s No. 1 prospect in Michigan, completing all six passes for 45 yards on the opening drive.
Carr’s teammate, James Rush, capped off the first series with a 15-yard rushing score. It set the stage for a solid debut in the future Irish quarterback’s 2023 campaign.
“We had known that they were not going to let us go deep on them,” Carr told Blue & Gold in the locker room postgame before Brighton officials cleared out the facility due to an impending tornado warning. “It ended up great. It was a momentum starter.”
Carr built on the first stanza by completing his next four passes for 27 yards. Although that series ended without a score, an 80-yard pitch and catch by LaDainian Woods on the ensuing possession delivered a 14-3 Saline lead.
“It’s really good when you have athletes that I can dump it down, and they can take it,” Carr said of the play. “It was a really good play, and I’m excited to have those type of guys on this team.”
Eventually, Carr dropped his best throw of the game into a bucket for a 35-yard gain. That set up his only touchdown of the game: a 5-yard rushing score, with under five minutes to play in the second quarter. Saline pulled ahead 21-3.
Before his younger brother, Tommy Carr, took over at quarterback in the fourth quarter, Carr engineered three more scoring drives. His only mishap was a fluke interception. Otherwise, Carr had an outstanding start to his senior season.
The On3 Industry Ranking’s No. 50 0verall player and No. 6 quarterback finished the night 20-29 for 276 yards. He also showcased his rushing ability on his final series of the game by rushing for 12- and 16-yard gains.
Carr’s senior campaign continues by welcoming Dexter (Mich.) High to Saline High School on Sept. 1. Last season, he and the Hornets fell to the Dexter Dreadnaughts 21-14. Despite whatever Dexter or the weather throws at him, Carr will be ready to carve it up.
