How it happened: Tennessee takes second game of series from Kentucky
Tennessee took game two of the weekend series against Kentucky this afternoon with a 10-7 win over the Wildcats. The win moves the Vols into a tie with Kentucky for fourth place in the SEC East at 14-12 in league play.
SCORING SUMMARY
BOTTOM OF THE SECOND: Tennessee got things rolling in the second inning after going down in order in the first. Blake Burke started things off with a leadoff walk. Christian Moore followed that up with a single to put runners at first and second.
Zane Denton drove in Moore with a single to left then Christian Scott reached base after beating out a bunt down the third base line.
Maui Ahuna picked up two RBIs with a single to left to stake the Vols to an early 4-0 lead.
TOP OF THE THIRD: Kentucky’s Garret Smith touched up Chase Dollander for a solo home run to put the ‘Cats on the board.
BOTTOM OF THE FOURTH: It looked like Tennessee was going to go quietly in the fourth, but the Vols got a pair of two out singles from Cal Stark and Ahuna and Hunter Ensley loaded the bases by reaching on a fielder’s choice. Jared Dickey made the Wildcats pay by bombing a grand slam off the scoreboard in right field to put the Vols up 8-1.
TOP OF THE SIXTH: Kentucky started a rally of its own in the sixth inning, chasing Dollander off the mound with a couple of hits and two runs and then getting to reliever Cam Sewell for one more run in the inning before he ended the inning with the Vols lead cut to 8-4.
TOP OF THE SEVENTH: Kentucky ran Sewell off the mound after two hits and a walk trimmed the lead to 8-5. Chase Burns relieved Sewell and allowed another run to score on a wild pitch. Kentucky picked up another run off an RBI single from Jase Felker slicing the deficit to 8-7.
BOTTOM OF THE SEVENTH: Tennessee answered the ‘Cats with a timely little rally of its own. The Vols got back-to-back singles from Dickey and Burke to start the inning. Denton then came through again with a double to the wall in left field that drove in two runs and gave the Vols a little cushion at 10-7.
