Greg McElroy considers whether Bo Nix can replicate success at Oregon

Greg McElroy considered whether or not Bo Nix could replicate his success at Oregon after a standout 2022 campaign.
Nix came in at No. 4 in McElroy’s Pac-12 quarterback rankings. He trailed Caleb Willams, Michael Penix Jr. and Cam Rising.
Nix had the best year of his career after he transferred from Auburn. But without Kenny Dillingham, last year’s offensive coordinator who left for the Arizona State head coaching job, Nix might need to find other magic for 2023.
“Bo Nix of Oregon in at number four now,” McElroy said on Always College Football. “Kenny Dillingham is now the head coach at Arizona State. He was formerly the offensive coordinator of the Oregon Ducks. Coordinator change is a big question mark. I mean, will Bo Nix continue to play at a really high level? Last year he was off the charts. His first couple of years in school, not quite as efficient.
“Now, look at what he did: 29 passing touchdowns, 14 rushing touchdowns last year, accumulated over 4000 all-purpose yards. He’s perfectly equipped to run the offense that’s going to be used there in Eugene. But we haven’t at times seen some dips and some elevated levels of production. There’s been a little bit of inconsistency.”
Last season, Nix totaled 3,593 yards, 29 touchdowns, seven interceptions, a 71.9% completion percentage, 510 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns.
As far as what fans saw at Auburn, that was a rollercoaster ride for Nix at Auburn. Now, he is full steam ahead.
This new version of Nix is different and better than the old. That’s McElroy’s take, which is believing Nix can paly at a high level, regardless of the offensive coordinator change.
“Now, I think that inconsistency is behind him,” McElroy said. “I really believe that the Auburn Bo Nix is not the Oregon Bo Nix. Two very different players. He’s more confident and I thought he looked really comfortable last year when healthy, but did get a little banged up towards the end of the year.”
Will Stein stepped in as the new offensive coordinator. He previously served as the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
As a member of the Class of 2019, Nix was a five-star recruit out of Pinson (Ala.) Scottsboro School, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 3 overall prospect in the state, the No. 2 quarterback in the class and the No. 32 overall prospect in the class.
