Greg McElroy cautions Michigan about Maryland in 2023

Greg McElroy cautions Michigan about Maryland in 2023

Michigan is supposed to be one of the best teams in the nation when they take the field this fall. Even so, an unexpected game will have Greg McElroy keeping an eye on the Wolverines as they close out their season.

McElroy broke down Michigan’s win total of 10.5 on ‘Always College Football’ this weekend. The big key to that number is going to be their final three games when they’re at Penn State, at Maryland, and against Ohio State. However, with the Nittany Lions and Buckeyes sandwiching the Terps, he circled that one as a dangerous matchup for the Wolverines if their focus isn’t where it needs to be that week.

“That road trip to Maryland the week before you play in The Big Game is one that does not need to be taken lightly,” McElroy said. “Maryland has got some firepower. They played Michigan closer than most last year. I think that that group could be a dangerous one, especially when traveling to College Park in the second to last week of the season.”

“When everyone’s talking about ‘What a great win on the road against Penn State!’? And ‘Hey, get ready for next week! Ohio State is coming to town!’? Be careful of the Terps,” said McElroy.

On one hand, Maryland is a good enough team on their own to make something happen. To be clear, Jim Harbaugh is 8-0 against Maryland including 3-0 against Mike Locksley. Those wins have come with an average margin of victory of 26.1 points. With that said, the Terrapins came as close as they have been to beating the Wolverines under Harbaugh last season. In the end, three turnovers cost them in what was a 34-27 loss.

Additionally, that spot on the schedule is massive for Michigan as well as the Big Ten as a whole. Penn State and Ohio State are likely going to be the Wolverine’s main competition in the conference this season. On top of that, the Buckeyes will obviously be looking for revenge in the final game of the season. That leaves the Terrapins in a prime spot to spook them or possibly even upset them.

Many will likely favor Michigan heavily when they arrive to play in SECU Stadium on November 18th. Considering all things, though, McElroy believes it could definitely be a trap game for the Wolverines if they don’t bring the appropriate attention to the table after playing Penn State and before their date with Ohio State.
