Get to know two-sport Ole Miss commit Austin Simmons

Get to know two-sport Ole Miss commit Austin Simmons

On Saturday, 2025 Moore Haven (Fla.) quarterback Austin Simmons shocked the recruiting world by flipping his verbal commitment from Florida to Ole Miss. The now 2023 prospect intends on playing both baseball and football at Ole Miss.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder is the No. 4 quarterback and No. 72 overall recruit nationally in the 2025 class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average which utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. A first-team all-state selection in 2022 at Pahokee (Fla.), Simmons possesses additional offers from Miami, Florida State, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Penn State, Arkansas, Auburn and Louisville, among others.

After taking an official visit to Ole Miss June 2, rumblings began Simmons was thinking of flipping his commitment. But he returned to the Sunshine State and took a multi-day unofficial visit to Gainesville to meet back up with Billy Napier and the Gators staff. But after talking things over with his parents, the southpaw quarterback and two-way baseball star elected to join Lane Kiffin‘s 2023 class.

He joins an Ole Miss class which finished 25th nationally in the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings but did not have a quarterback commit. The Rebels instead added LSU transfer Walker Howard and Oklahoma State transfer Spencer Sanders during the offseason. Those two will presumably back up 2022 starter Jaxson Dart this season.

During his sophomore season, Simmons passed for 3,161 yards and 24 touchdowns to just nine interceptions.

He also ran for three more scores as well. At True North Classical Academy (Fla.), he hit .365 and drove in 16 runs. On the bump, he was 4-1 with a 2.65 earned run average.

Simmons has a 5.35 GPA and graduated from high school as a freshman. He currently is on track to obtain his associate’s degree before he enrolls with the Rebels. He’s been dual-enrolled his entire high school career and has 48 college credits as of today.

On3’s Cody Bellaire recently joined #notcommitted to talk all things recruiting. He gave his thoughts on Austin Simmons the quarterback prospect.

“The baseball stuff is hard to ignore and I think you see it,” Bellaire said. “He has the ability to throw from different arm slots, over the top to 3/4 to sidearm to borderline submarine.

“He’s sort of like Demond Williams Jr., what Austin can do is push the ball down the field. The ball jumps out of his hand,” Bellaire said. “It’s extremely impressive. The athleticism shines on tape, he’s a smooth mover who manipulates the pocket really well. Arm talent is extremely expressive. He has all the physical and athletic tools to excel at the next level.”

The jump two cycles up is a big one, but Bellaire believes Simmons has the skill set to excel in Kiffin’s offense when his name is called in the coming years.
