Georgia QB intel headed into preseason scrimmage No. 2

It’s Saturday in Athens and Georgia is two weeks out from the start of its 2023 season. The Bulldogs will look to defend back-to-back National Championships and make history. That means that the preseason’s final scrimmage will take place and DawgsHQ has gathered some key quarterback intel before the start of it.

Persons with knowledge of the situation tell us that Carson Beck will get the vast majority, if not all, of the first-team reps at quarterback. We’re told that while Beck got off to a sluggish start, has been performing quite well over the past couple of weeks. There were some missed opportunities in the first scrimmage that he’ll look to clean up in the second, but, overall, his work on the practice field the past 10 days or so has been strong.

Brock Vandagriff and Gunner Stockton, both of whom have had really strong preseasons to this point, will split the second team reps with Vandagriff expected to get the lion’s share. Vandagriff got off to a fast start during camp and has kept it rolling. Stockton had a tremendous first scrimmage working with the No. 2 and No. 3 offenses.

What it all means…

All signs point to Beck being the starting quarterback for Georgia to begin the 2023 season. That was the vibe throughout spring drills, a feeling that got even stronger once the spring game was in the books. Beck was far and away the most effective quarterback in the G-Day game and many (UGA insiders, media, fans, etc.) felt that it was a foregone conclusion that Beck would get the job.

It appears that he has done enough at this point to hold on to it. Time will tell whether Georgia head coach Kirby Smart decides to come out and name a starter or not. DawgsHQ could see that happening after today’s scrimmage or not at all.

What we do expect, however, is for all three quarterbacks to get a chance to play and run the offense in the Bulldogs’ first couple games of the season. With UT-Martin and Ball State on the Georgia schedule, there are snaps to be had by all three.
