Georgia holds at No. 2 in Week 10 coaches poll

Georgia is still the nation’s No. 2 team according to the latest US LBM/USA Today coaches poll. Coming off their second open week of the season, the Bulldogs rank behind Oregon and have two first-place votes. Those two spots are the same as last week and that’s true for everyone inside the top six.

Penn State is still at No. 3 followed by Ohio State at No. 4. Miami rounds out the top five with Texas coming in at No. 6. Tennessee, Clemson, Notre Dame, and Iowa State round out the top 10.

UGA is where it wants to be at this point in the season. It is firmly in the mix for the SEC Championship and a spot in the College Football Playoff. When the first College Football Playoff rankings come out in a little over a week, the Bulldogs will be in the projected 12-team field provided they beat Florida on Saturday. They might even be in the projected field with a loss.

In order to avoid one of those and stay in complete control of it’s own destiny, Georgia will have to get through one of College Football’s toughest closing stretches. UGA has Florida in Jacksonville, then Ole Miss on the road before returning home to play Tennessee, UMass, and Georgia Tech at home to end the regular season. The Volunteers come in at No. 7 while Ole Miss ranks No. 18. The Bulldogs have just three more league games but 12 more quarters of SEC football will be tough per Kirby Smart.

“I don’t think people are going to get it until about two more weeks,” Smart said earlier this week, alluding to the release of the first College Football Playoff Rankings. “They’re going to look up and say, ‘Oh the SEC is average. They’ve got a bunch of average teams,’ but I promise you, nobody wants to step into this eight-game league because it’s not only the physicality week in and week out that wears on you and tears on you, it’s the road games and the atmospheres you go into are sometimes a touchdown advantage because of penalties and crowd noise. It’s just not the same. It means more.”
