Georgia hits back-to-back homers in five-run first inning

No. 14 Georgia is looking to make quick work at the Athens Regional, and gave itself a major boost Sunday with a five-run first inning in the regional final against Virginia Tech.

The five-run inning included back-to-back two-run home runs by designated player Sydney Chamlbey and left fielder Jaydyn Goodwin.

Both home runs came in two strike counts. Chambley’s homer — which was her third of the regional so far — came on an 0-2 count with second baseman Sydney Kuma on base. Goodwin followed that up by sending a 3-2 pitch deep into the trees beyond the right field fence.

It was Goodwin’s second homer of the regional and her seventh of the season. The freshman outfielder is hitting .270 on the season for Georgia.

Chambley’s homer streak actually extends back to their SEC Tournament loss to South Carolina, making it a four-game run.

“I think like Coach Tony said, we’re just trusting our training,” Chambley said after defeating Virginia Tech on Saturday in their first matchup during the regional. “I think the preparation and the work that we’ve done going into the week and just what was to come. We just did a really good job of being competitive and trusting our zone that we’re working with, so that, in the long term, paid off. Even if wasn’t, we still just trusted the process.”
