Georgia coming after 2025 South Carolina commit Caleb Williams
The Georgia Bulldogs have already taken one commit from the South Carolina Gamecocks this cycle, flipping four-star cornerback Shamari Earls on Sunday, but they don’t look to be stopping there, as the Dawgs extended an offer to three-star defensive lineman Caleb Williams soon thereafter.
“Before I was committed to South Carolina, Georgia liked and reposted my stuff. Then, I committed, and it was one of those things where all the schools come in and try to get you. It felt like that,” Williams said of his recruitment to this point. “We had a showcase out here, and there were a lot of schools trying to get me. Still, I stayed committed to South Carolina.”
But Georgia shot its shot earlier this week despite the pledge.
“They got my number. TRob [Travaris Robinson] text me and called me, and he gave me the offer. He’d seen me at that camp, and he said he loved my size, loved my height, and my speed. He said, ‘We gotta get you down for Coach [Tray] Scott and Coach Kirby [Smart] to see you,” Williams said. “They invited me to a camp before they offered me, but I couldn’t make it, because I had a lot going on at school. Then, after that, my boy Mari [Shamari Earls] flipped, and I said, ‘Bro, why did you do that?’ After that, Georgia called me up and said they were trying to see what was up. I said, ‘Dang.’”
And Earls wasted no time reaching out to reinforce the message of his new team.
“Of course he’s trying to get me to flip,” Williams said of Earls. “He’s with them now, and he knows how good I am. We are rivals down here. We are big time rivals. He told me, ‘Look man, it’s Georgia. It’s like Alabama or Oregon. You have to come see it once for the bucket list.’ I said, ‘Yeah, you’re right.’”
Will that trip materialize?
“I don’t even know. It all just happened, so it’s too early to say,” Williams said.
While he’s not ready to lock in any plans, the 6-foot-6, 260 pound defender admits that the offer caught his attention.
“It’s the Georgia Bulldogs. It felt great. It’s Georgia. Right now, though, it’s loyalty. I’m loyal to my school,” Williams said. “(Georgia is) a powerhouse. Everyone knows that. It’s crazy how they came out of the blue and offered me. It’s crazy to me. I don’t even know what to say.”
For now, though, he’s firm in his standing with the Gamecocks.
“It was the love (that put them over the top), the love from the coaches and my positional coach. I love that dude a lot, and he has let me know they need me to come in next fall to play. He is planning for that future already,” Williams said. “They have stayed to their word, and I have, too. Word is bond.”
Caleb Williams ranks as the nation’s No. 463 overall prospect in the Class of 2025 per the On3 Industry Ranking.
