Gators ‘got a chance’ with 5-star WR Caleb Cunningham entering OV

Five-star receiver Caleb Cunningham of Ackerman (Miss.) Choctaw County said Thursday the Florida Gators are sitting behind a few other teams entering his official visit this week to Gainesville. But, he added, it’s far too soon to count out Billy Napier’s program.

“Florida still has a great chance,” Cunningham told Gators Online. “They keep recruiting me and never give up. I like that. People may think they don’t have a chance but they’re going to keep working hard to get me. It’s a great place, a great environment with great coaches. Coach (Billy) Gonzales and Coach (David) Doecker stay in touch with me every day.”

Cunningham is the No. 2 receiver recruit in the country for the On3 Industry Rankings. He already has visited the Gators multiple times, most recently in April for the Orange & Blue game.

Right now, Auburn is his No. 1 school; he officially visited the Tigers last weekend.

“They are No. 1 because of the brotherhood there,” Cunningham said. “I felt the love and then they have great people there. It’s a great place to be. Then, it’s me spending time with the receivers there like Cam Coleman and Perry Thompson. We’ve got a great bond. We spend a lot of time with each.”

Who’s next in the pecking order after Auburn?

“I would probably say either (Mississippi) State, Bama or Ole Miss,” Cunningham told Gators Online. So basically, the Gators have their work cut out this weekend.

“Yes, they do but they’re up there, too,” Cunningham said. “They’ve definitely got a chance. They’re really going to push hard for me. Anything can happen. We’ll have to wait and see. I know they’re going to try their best.”

Cunningham said he expects to spend time with touted freshman quarterback DJ Lagway while in Gainesville. He watched Lagway this spring and was impressed.

“I just got off the phone with Coach Napier. He said Lagway had asked him if I was coming this weekend,” Cunningham said. “He’s a great guy. I see myself spending time with him this weekend. He’s a great person. He’s a leader. It helps them a lot having one of the top QBs.”
