Gators are gaining momentum with priority TE target Micah Jones
Madison (Miss.) Central tight end Micah Jones has collected roughly a dozen offers and more opportunities could be on the way.
As of today, however, two schools are out front with On3’s No. 25-ranked tight end.
“Florida and LSU are my two schools sticking out from the pack right now,” Jones told Gators Online.
LSU extended an offer at the start of 2024, while the Gators joined the fray last August. Their early commitment to Jones’ recruitment has allowed them to receive three visits to this point.
In addition to those trips to Gainesville, Jones was seen by Florida tight ends coach Russ Callaway during the first day of the spring evaluation period. That made a strong impression.
“It was really good. He made me feel like a definite top priority,” said Jones. “We had a meeting in the morning and then he stayed and watched me practice. I really appreciated him coming out.
“Basically, he is really fired up to get me down there for my official visit on May 31. He’s been talking to me for a long time and trying his best to get me to Florida, and I think there is a really good chance.”
Jones views Russ Callaway as a player’s coach
Each visit at Florida has provided Jones with a new experience, with those expectations likely to be met later this month as well. The Gators check several boxes, but the relationship with Callaway continues to be one of the highlights.
“He has a lot of energy; he’s a high-energy guy. When he coaches, he wants to get the most out of you and really teaches you,” said Jones.
“He kind of has fun with the whole thing too because sometimes this college ball can feel like a job sometimes and be draining. I can tell their tight end room likes to have fun.”
Florida is making a strong case
Surprisingly, Jones has just one official visit scheduled and it’s obviously with the Gators.
LSU, Michigan State, Colorado and Arkansas are some additional schools in the mix for one, but UF getting ahead of the pack should provide Billy Napier‘s staff with more optimism.
“I’ve been on a game-day visit; I’ve been to a spring practice, and just the experience and culture they have down there, the city of Gainesville in general, it’s just a great experience every time,” said Jones.
Jones, a 3-star prospect, hopes to make his decision during the month of July.
