Future 50 Day 2 Notebook: Observations, tidbits on several Michigan targets

*** My top three quarterbacks at Future 50 were: five-star Faizon Brandon, Michigan commit Brady Hart and Oklahoma commit Jaden O’Neal. My bottom three were: Florida commit Will Griffin, Florida State commit Brady Smiegel and Notre Dame commit Noah Grubbs. It’s crazy to think that Michigan was heavily involved with the latter three and could have easily ended up with one. However, Kirk Campbell got the No. 1 guy on his board in Hart, and it’s clear he was head and shoulders better than the group behind him. As I’ve mentioned over the last couple of weeks, Hart has five-star potential and will only rise in the rankings. There is a reason On3 named him today’s Future 50 MVP.

*** Top 100 Woodberry Forest (Va.) School running back Savion Hiter had a bit of a quiet first day. However, he was a top performer on Day 2, with On3 national ranking him inside the Top 5. Hiter looked terrific going through individual drills and really shined as a pass catcher. Hiter is a three-down all-purpose back that can do it all. He could be used in a very similar role as Donovan Edwards early in his career, but he does have the build to be strong between the tackles as well. Hiter is at the very top of Michigan’s running back board for next cycle, and with good reason.

*** The more I watch Top 100 Woodberry Forest (Va.) School wide receiver Dyzier Carter, the more he reminds me of a more explosive version of Michigan wide receiver I’Marion Stewart. Carter doesn’t have elite track times, but he’s electric on the field. If he can add the top end straight line speed, he could be a true difference maker in Michigan’s offense. With that said, Carter is a consistent slot option that can also return kicks and punts and be used on jet sweeps. Hiter and Carter are teammates and friends. It would be great to see Michigan find a way to pull both.

*** Michigan is probably not going to end up with JaDon Blair this cycle, but it is clear the new Michigan defensive staff values that type of size and length at the safety position. I would expect the Wolverines to continue to target that type of prospect next cycle, and Top 100 Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman athlete Jett Washington definitely fits the bill. At 6-foot-4, 185 pounds, Washington is a towering presence on the back end and moves really well for his size. While he could spin down, I like how fluid he is in the secondary. Michigan recently offered and believe the Wolverines will prioritize him.

*** Another prospect that fits the description is Top 100 Rock Hill (S.C.) South Pointe safety J’Zavien Currence, who recently added a Michigan offer. At 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, Currence also has impressive size and length on the back end but is more filled out than the aforementioned Washington. While Washington may be a bit more of a springy athlete, Currence is so impressive on the hoof and definitely offers the the opportunity to spend some time in the box and play the run. Like with Washington, I expect Michigan to make a push here.

*** One of the more consistent corners at the event was Top 100 Huntersville (N.C.) William Hough cornerback Samari Matthews. At 6-foot, 180 pounds, Matthews has a well-filled-out frame with plenty of length. I love how fluid he is as well his overall technique. Matthews has a chance to be a true shut down corner at a place like Michigan. I expect him to be one of Michigan’s top targets at the position next cycle.

*** I asked the aforementioned Hart which prospects he was really forming a relationship with this weekend, and he was quick to mention Top 100 Jacksonville (Fla.) Bolles linebacker/safety Simeon Caldwell, who visited Michigan earlier this month. Hart also told me he was working on On300 Chesapeake (Va.) Oscar Smith wide receiver Travis Johnson. As I mentioned yesterday, Hart and Johnson had instant chemistry in the 5v5 flag portion of the event. Both will be at the BBQ at The Big House late next month.
