From The Road: Top 100 WR Quincy Porter locks in Michigan official visit

*** Top 100 Oradell (N.J.) Bergen Catholic wide receiver Quincy Porter is set to make an official visit to Michigan on June 14. This is significant as Porter previously had just one OV set with rival Ohio State (June 7). The Wolverines have done a fantastic job with Porter throughout the cycle and hold the slight lead on the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine. However, the outcome of the Porter race will really be determined during his summer officials — Porter plans to make a decision soon after his trips. Oklahoma is the only other school slated to receive an OV. The Sooners are set to get him on campus on June 21. Alabama and Georgia visited Porter on Thursday and could also be official visit destinations.

*** Penn State was previously considered a threat, but it appears the Nittany Lions have faded here. From talking to Porter and program sources, it seems like this one is a good old-fashioned Michigan-Ohio State battle with Oklahoma in the mix as a wild card. Ohio State is obviously a wide receiver factory, provides a pass happy offense and can play NIL. OSU wide receivers coach Brian Hartline was at Porter’s practice on Thursday and spent a ton of time with Porter and his parents. On the flip side of the coin, the pathway to early playing time is clear at Michigan. Porter could very well be a starter as a true freshman. No, Michigan isn’t a pass-first team, but the Wolverines are in desperate need of a big-bodied wide out and jut had two players drafted at the position. The need from U-M is definitely appealing to Porter.

*** Hartline may have attender Porter’s workout, but Michigan actually took a bit of a different approach. Instead of having wide receivers coach Ron Bellamy bump into OSU, Georgia and Alabama, the entire Michigan offensive staff showed up to Bergen Catholic the day prior and met with Porter, his father and his younger brother. This gave Bellamy, new offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell and others a chance to build on their relationship with the Porter family and answer any questions they had. That quality time was more valuable than Hartline’s practice stop, in my opinion. The fact that the entire offensive staff showed up also showed Porter how much of a priority he is for the Wolverines.

*** Right now, I feel like this race is too close to call. Again, the official visits will determine this race next month. Landing Porter would be absolutely massive for Michigan. I’ve long stated that Porter is a five-star level player, and it’s clear Michigan values him the same way. Porter would also bring some much-needed size to the roster. He is a legit 6-foot-3 and is filling out his frame nicely. Porter practiced despite a minor knee tweak and still looked like a dominant force. I’ve likened him to NFL Hall of Famer Terrell Owens. From a Michigan perspective, think Braylon Edwards. He’s that type of talent.
