From The Locker Room: The mood is a ‘sick’ one for Ole Miss after laying egg in SEC opener

There were very few words said by Jaxson Dart in the moments after No. 6 Ole Miss suffered its first loss of the season in a 20-17 defeat to Kentucky on its home turf.

What started out as a 18-point favorite on Sunday resulted in a game where the offense at times looked like it would not know how to score 10 points let alone cover the spread against its first Southeastern Conference opponent.

Still, the senior quarterback walked into the team meeting room and addressed the media after the Rebels shocking loss. Dart summed up the mood of the locker room in one word

“Sick.”

Dart’s short answer when I asked what the immediate moments after the game were like for a team who was expecting to be notching its fifth straight win and not left wondering what is the path back into the College Football Playoffs.

Dart had a head-scratching game as he threw for 261 yards a touchdown and no intercpetions yet felt like he played much worse.

“There’s really not much to say,” Dart added. “You can look at it two ways. You can just quit or you can take it on the chin. You can lay down on the ground and just stay there or you can get up.”

Lane Kiffin’s quarterback echoed the fifth-year Ole Miss head coach’s sentiments of not “overreacting” to Saturday’s loss.

“I thought (Dart) did some good things,” Kiffin said. “He wasn’t almost perfect like he had been coming into the game. There’s a deep post early where Tre (Harris) runs by the guy and he misses the throw and we’re just used to him making that. Well, people miss those once in a while, especially when you play better players.”
