Friday Night Breakdown: 5-star Auburn WR commit Perry Thompson

FOLEY, ALABAMA – Auburn Live was back on the high school football scene Friday night. This time, we were in Foley, Ala. for the 7A matchup between Foley (Ala.) High and Baker (Ala.) High. The spotlight was on 5-star Auburn wide receiver commit Perry Thompson who is taking on 4-star Auburn wide receiver commit Bryce Cain.
In-game notes and analysis
— No Thompson on defense so far. Not anything unusual as he is a receiver first.
— Perry Thompson gets the first return for Foley after a Baker touchdown that was run heavy.
— Thompson gets the first throw out of the backfield. He makes the first man miss for one of the more impressive short gains you’ll see. No. 1 for Baker who is assigned to Thompson all night is a G5 college prospect.
— An out route to Thompson on 3rd down.. He catches and makes the first guy miss again.. Then he Carrie’s three guys out of bounds. And a late hit was added on. He popped back up. Touchdown Foley on a long run. 7-7 late in the first.
— Foley gets Thompson involved with the jet sweep look.. He gets a nice hole and breaks 2 tackles on his way to a first down run. Thompson is going to make the first guy miss. Count on it.
Post-game notes
— Thompson is as advertised. He is a 5-star and he is every bit of it. He is big, he’s physical, he will take a hand off, make a block, chase down a tackle, defend the ball in the air on defense, and make highlight reel catches.
— I find myself looking for something to criticize him on, and I come up empty most of the time. Thompson is a football player, which is not always the case for elite athletes. He understands the game and how to play correctly.
— Thompson is going to make the first defender miss. He has elite twitch. He also feels where defenders are at all times. The most impressive play (besides the big catch) was his in between the tackles run in which he found the hole and ran through several arm tackles. He is elite.
— Thompson was double teamed for most of the second half. Foley did not have any creative ways to get him the ball, so he was mostly taken out of the game.
— I think I am most impressed with Thompson’s physicality for his size. He is big, but plays big as well. He played just about every snap for Foley Friday night and had several big plays.
