Fresh off FSU visit, Georgetown transfer Primo Spears will decide tonight between ‘Noles, Kansas

Florida State men’s basketball coach Leonard Hamilton could land another important puzzle piece tonight as he tries to reconstruct his roster heading into the 2023-24 season.

Georgetown guard transfer Primo Spears, who averaged 16 points and 5.3 assists per game last season, posted on social media Friday that he will make his decision around 9:30 p.m. ET tonight. He was still on his official visit to Florida State at the time.

Spears took officials to FSU and Kansas during this past week, and he has said he will choose between the Jayhawks and Seminoles. The guard previously considered Arkansas and TCU as well.

If Florida State lands Spears, it would be Hamilton’s third transfer pickup of the offseason. He earlier landed VCU forward Jamir Watkins and La Salle guard Josh Nickelberry.

The 6-foot-7 Watkins averaged 9.5 points this past season on a VCU team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The 6-4 Watkins averaged 10.7 points at La Salle, where he ranked among the Atlantic 10 leaders in 3-pointers made per game (2.3) and 3-point percentage (40.1).

Spears, a Connecticut native who started his college career at Duquesne, is listed at 6-3 and 185 pounds. The point guard entered his name in the transfer portal shortly after Georgetown fired head coach Patrick Ewing.

New Florida State assistant coach Kevin Nickelberry played a key role in recruiting Spears to Georgetown.

Whoever lands Spears will have to await word from the NCAA about his request for immediate eligibility. Because he is an undergraduate transferring to his third school, he will need a waiver to play during the ’23-24 season.

Hamilton and Florida State are looking to bring in at least four transfers this offseason after a disastrous 2022-23 campaign, which ended with a 9-23 record. The Seminoles already have seen four players enter the transfer portal — veteran guards Matthew Cleveland and Caleb Mills, center Naheem McLeod and freshman guard Jeremiah Bembry.

If the Seminoles land Spears, they likely will turn their focus next to bringing in a post player to help a front court that returns 6-10 senior Jaylan Gainey, who missed last season due to a knee injury, 6-10 sophomore Cam Corhen, 6-11 sophomore Baba Miller, 6-7 junior Cam’Ron Fletcher and 6-10 forward De’Ante Green.
