Four-star quarterback KJ Lacey discusses Notre Dame offer

Four-star quarterback KJ Lacey discusses Notre Dame offer

For many class of 2025 prospects who announced offers from Notre Dame on Pot of Gold day last month, they had received the good news well in advance of the day, and the staff asked them to wait until March 17 to post the news.

That wasn’t the case with Saraland (Ala.) High quarterback KJ Lacey. The top-100 prospect had the scholarship offer call that day after receiving some interest from the staff for a couple weeks prior.

“I had been communicating with them,” Lacey told Blue & Gold. “And on that day I got the Pot of Gold graphic. I called Notre Dame after that, and they told me that they were offering me. I was really surprised.”

New Notre Dame quarterbacks coach Gino Guidugli extended the offer to Lacey, who ranks as the nation’s No. 58 player and No. 6 signal-caller according to the 2025 On3 Industry Ranking.

“I like Coach Gino,” said Lacey. “We’re trying to figure out a date so I can get up to Notre Dame.”

Most kids from Alabama — especially from the most southern part of the state like Saraland — don’t have much exposure to Notre Dame. It’ll be up to the Irish staff to change that when it comes to Lacey.

“I know about Notre Dame, but I haven’t been all-in watching them, yet,” Lacey noted. “I’m not educated on them.”

Lacey is wanting to get out to Tennessee soon and has visits locked in to see Alabama April 10 and Ole Miss the following day.

“I wanted to get a couple visits knocked out for my spring break,” he added.

It’s early in Lacey’s recruitment as he’s wrapping up his sophomore year of high school, but he already has an idea of what’s important to him at the next level.

“I want to have a strong relationship with the coaches,” he said. “I want to feel welcomed and make sure their playing style fits me — throwing the ball a lot.”

At 5-11, 165 pounds with a rocket arm and good mobility — plus lighting up defenses in the state of Alabama — one quarterback comparison that Lacey gets certainly makes sense.

“I get compared to Bryce Young all the time; I wear No. 9 and everything,” Lacey said. “I get Kyler Murray and Patrick Mahomes too. I hear a lot of different guys.”

Lacey is coming off a sophomore season in which he led the Saraland Spartans to a state championship trophy. During it, he completed 200-314 (63.7%) passes for 3,177 yards and 40 touchdowns. Lacey only threw five interceptions.

Alabama, Florida State, Auburn, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas A&M are among Lacey’s scholarship offers.
