It was a star studded recruiting weekend in Knoxville as Tennessee hosted a bevy of coveted prospects for their ‘865-Live’ event. One of the big names in attendance was Georgia athlete Kam Mikell.
Mikell (6-foot-0, 180 pounds), from Statesboro, Ga. is a highly sought after prospect who could end up on either side of the ball at the next level either at cornerback or wide receiver. As a result of that potential he spent time with Tennessee coaches from both sides of the ball on Saturday.
“I talked to coaches on both sides of the ball. I probably talked to every coach on the staff, I wouldn’t say that I talked coaches from either side of the ball more than the other,” he said.
“I feel more comfortable on offense because that’s what I’ve been playing longer, but I’m open to playing defense, I don’t have a problem with it.”
Saturday’s event was a chance for prospects, their families and the Tennessee staff to mingle and spend time together in a low key environment that included activities for everyone to participate in.
Mikell was among those prospects who said he thoroughly enjoyed the set-up.
“I really enjoyed it,” Mikell said. “The scavenger hunt was really fun. We had the talent show and then putt-putt, that was really nice to do. It was something different. All around I just had a good time.
“I just wanted to come and have a good time, to spend time with the coaches and that’s what it was.”
Mikell is a priority target for the in-state Georgia Bulldogs, and has already made an official visit to Athens. He has an upcoming official visit scheduled to Georgia Tech next week and will also take an official to South Carolina in June.
Mikell has set his official visit to Tennessee for the weekend of Nov. 18, which happens to be when the Vols play the Bulldogs.
Many have pegged Mikell to stay home and play for the ‘Dawgs, but Tennessee has definitely made an impression.
If Mikell were to end up on offense in college, he likes what he’s seen from Tennessee’s style of play.
“They’re really explosive (offensively),” Mikell said. “The coaches talked to me about how I would fit into the scheme with my speed and how versatile I am with the ball in my hands.
“It’s really exciting to see how they dominate the deep ball. The offense is a deep threat type of thing.”
Another aspect of the Vols’ recruiting efforts that has struck a chord with Mickell is the personal touch he’s felt from head coach Josh Heupel.
Recruits often describe the Vols’ head coach as ‘genuine, down to earth, or easy to talk to.’ Add Mikell to the list of those prospects that find Heupel approachable and relatable.
“It’s been good talking to Coach Heupel. I feel like I’ve got a connection and a bond with him,” Mikell said. “He’s a good dude. I really don’t talk to a lot of head coaches, but he’s one that I talk to most of the time.
“That separates them a little bit because I feel like if you’re talking to the head coach they want you more.”
Mikell is considered the No. 122 rising senior and the No. 15 overall cornerback in the 2024 class, per the On3 Industry Ranking. On3’s personal rankings list the 6-foot, 180-pound defensive back as the 56th-best player in the country.
